Remote Physical Therapist Assistant

Guide patients through virtual PT programs — coaching exercise form, monitoring progress, reinforcing therapist instructions, and supporting recovery from home.

$24–$36 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects healthcare professionals with opportunities across virtual physical therapy, telehealth rehabilitation, and digital musculoskeletal care programs.

We are seeking qualified Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) for remote rehabilitation opportunities supporting virtual PT clinics, telehealth musculoskeletal programs, and digital rehab platforms.

A Remote Physical Therapist Assistant supports patients participating in virtual physical therapy programs by guiding them through prescribed exercise routines, observing form via video, monitoring progress, reinforcing the supervising physical therapist's plan of care, and documenting each encounter. Working under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, the PTA helps patients complete their rehabilitation safely and consistently between in-person visits.

This position is well-suited to a PTA who enjoys patient coaching, movement education, and helping patients recover through technology-enabled care.

The specific virtual PT program, patient population, technology platform, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote physical therapist assistant jobs, virtual PTA jobs, work-from-home physical therapy assistant, telehealth rehab PTA, or remote musculoskeletal coaching PTA roles.

Scheduled Session Blocks — Predictable Day, Predictable Week

Virtual PT programs operate on scheduled appointment blocks, which means your day is built around known patient sessions rather than unpredictable volume. Most virtual rehab programs offer flexible session lengths (30–60 minutes) and weekday hours, with some offering early morning or evening slots to accommodate patients who work. There are no overnight shifts, no weekend rotations in most programs, and no on-call. We offer both full-time and part-time positions, and many virtual PTAs work 4-day compressed weeks. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Physical Therapist Assistant, you may support virtual PT patients across scheduled sessions and digital touchpoints.

  • Conduct virtual PT sessions with patients via video, following the supervising physical therapist's plan of care.
  • Guide patients through prescribed therapeutic exercises and observe movement form via video.
  • Reinforce exercise technique, safety precautions, and home program instructions.
  • Monitor patient progress, tolerance, and reported pain levels during sessions.
  • Document each session accurately in the rehabilitation EHR, including exercises performed, patient response, and any changes in status.
  • Communicate relevant patient observations to the supervising physical therapist.
  • Escalate changes in patient condition, new pain, or safety concerns to the supervising PT immediately.
  • Support patient adherence to home exercise programs through outreach and encouragement.
  • Help patients troubleshoot technology issues with the virtual PT platform.
  • Coordinate scheduling and follow-up sessions with the care team.
  • Reinforce patient education on posture, ergonomics, and activity modifications.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement activities.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual sessions.

Virtual Physical Therapy Focus

Virtual physical therapy allows patients to complete rehabilitation sessions from home with remote supervision and coaching. The PTA is essential to keeping patients engaged with their recovery program.

Depending on the program, virtual PT may focus on:

Post-surgical rehab
Orthopedic conditions
Gait and balance training
Sports rehabilitation
Chronic pain management
Musculoskeletal wellness

The PTA's role is to carry out the supervising physical therapist's plan of care, provide patient coaching, document objective findings, and escalate any concerns. PTAs do not independently evaluate, diagnose, or modify treatment plans — those functions belong to the supervising Physical Therapist, and the PTA coordinates with them per state practice act requirements.

This structure keeps the role focused on therapeutic exercise delivery, patient coaching, progress monitoring, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Video-Based Patient Coaching

Virtual PT requires excellent verbal and visual coaching skills — you're helping patients move correctly without being physically in the room.

You may help patients:

  • Set up their camera and space for a virtual PT session.
  • Understand and execute exercises with correct form.
  • Use household items safely as substitutes for equipment when needed.
  • Track pain, fatigue, and tolerance during activity.
  • Progress through the therapist's prescribed plan safely.
  • Know when to stop an exercise and contact their PT.
  • Stay motivated and consistent with their home program.

Clear movement demonstration, verbal cues, and encouragement are essential — virtual PT depends on the patient's ability to perform exercises correctly with remote guidance.

Virtual PT Workflow

A Remote Physical Therapist Assistant may follow a structured workflow across each virtual session.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Plan of Care Session Prep Virtual PT Session Observe & Coach Document Encounter Coordinate with PT Escalate If Needed

Supervision Requirements

PTAs work under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist per state practice acts and payer requirements. Supervision structure, co-signature requirements, and scope of duties vary by state and by employer. All sessions must remain within the PTA's authorized scope.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) license or certification applicable to the specific assignment.
  • Associate degree from an accredited PTA program.
  • Previous clinical experience in outpatient, orthopedic, rehabilitation, or comparable PT settings.
  • Strong verbal communication and patient coaching skills.
  • Comfortable guiding patients through movement via video.
  • Comfortable with digital documentation platforms and virtual care tools.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring clinical escalation.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing your virtual PT schedule — checking which patients have sessions, their current plan of care, and any notes from the supervising physical therapist.

You'll log into the virtual PT platform and connect with each patient at their scheduled time to guide them through their prescribed exercises.

Throughout each session, you'll observe their movement, provide verbal cues to correct form, monitor for signs of pain or fatigue, and adjust difficulty within the boundaries of the plan of care.

After sessions, you'll document observations accurately and communicate any concerns to the supervising PT — especially any changes in pain, tolerance, or function.

The role combines exercise coaching, patient education, progress monitoring, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike in-person PT clinics, virtual PT relies heavily on verbal cueing and clear patient communication — a different clinical skill set than hands-on care.
