Remote Certified Medical Assistant

Support virtual clinical teams — preparing patients for visits, managing intake and chart prep, coordinating with providers, and keeping care moving from home.

$18–$28 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects healthcare professionals with opportunities across virtual primary care, digital specialty practices, and telehealth clinical support programs.

We are seeking qualified Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) for remote opportunities supporting virtual primary care practices, telehealth specialty clinics, digital health companies, and health systems running remote clinical support programs.

A Remote Certified Medical Assistant supports virtual clinical teams by preparing patients for encounters, managing intake, coordinating with providers, documenting care, and supporting patient communication through digital platforms. Working alongside virtual physicians, nurse practitioners, and clinical staff, the CMA keeps the clinical workflow moving so providers can focus on patient care.

This position is well-suited to a certified medical assistant who wants to work in virtual care — supporting patients and providers through a different but meaningful clinical support role, without the demands of a traditional clinic environment.

The specific virtual practice, patient population, technology platform, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote certified medical assistant jobs, virtual CMA jobs, work-from-home medical assistant, telehealth medical assistant, or remote clinical support jobs roles.

Scheduled Clinical Days with Predictable Workflows

Virtual clinical support runs on scheduled patient encounters, giving your day predictability and structure. Practices typically offer daytime, evening, or weekend coverage to accommodate patients who work or have family commitments. Many virtual practices offer flexible 6-, 8-, or 10-hour blocks, and some CMAs work 4-day compressed weeks. There are no overnight shifts in most programs, no on-call, and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Certified Medical Assistant, you may support virtual clinical teams across a range of activities.

  • Prepare patients for virtual visits — confirming appointment details, reason for visit, and any pre-visit requirements.
  • Conduct pre-visit intake by phone or secure message — gathering medical history updates, medications, and current symptoms.
  • Review patient charts and prepare documentation for the provider's virtual encounter.
  • Support the provider during virtual visits by reviewing charts, documenting key details, and coordinating next steps.
  • Document vitals, medication lists, and patient-reported information in the EHR.
  • Coordinate prescription refills, lab orders, and referrals as directed by the provider.
  • Reinforce provider instructions after visits — including medication instructions, follow-up steps, and warning signs to watch for.
  • Answer routine patient questions through secure messaging and patient portals within the CMA scope.
  • Coordinate with the clinical team on scheduling, follow-up, and care coordination.
  • Help patients troubleshoot virtual visit technology — camera, microphone, platform login.
  • Escalate clinical concerns, new symptoms, or changes in condition to the appropriate clinical team member.
  • Track and follow up with patients who have missed appointments or need additional support.
  • Support preventive care scheduling and quality measure follow-through.
  • Participate in team meetings, quality reviews, and workflow improvement activities.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual interactions.

Virtual CMA Focus

Virtual medical assisting is a growing role in digital healthcare — supporting virtual primary care practices, telehealth specialty clinics, and digital health programs that rely on clinical support staff to keep workflows running.

Depending on the practice, virtual CMA work may involve:

Primary care support
Virtual visit preparation
Chart prep and documentation
Prescription coordination
Lab and referral coordination
Post-visit follow-up

The CMA's role is to support the clinical workflow within the scope of a medical assistant — not to independently diagnose, prescribe, or make clinical decisions. Clinical concerns that exceed the CMA scope are escalated to an RN, provider, or appropriate clinical team member per employer protocol.

This structure keeps the role focused on patient intake, chart support, documentation, care coordination, and appropriate escalation.

Virtual Patient Support & Technology

Virtual clinical care depends on patients being ready for their encounters — and CMAs are often the ones who make that happen.

You may help patients:

  • Log into the virtual visit platform and test their camera, microphone, and connection.
  • Understand what to expect during a virtual visit.
  • Prepare a list of symptoms, medications, and questions for the provider.
  • Update their medical history and medication list before the visit.
  • Navigate the patient portal for messages, results, and appointments.
  • Understand provider instructions after the visit.
  • Know who to contact with clinical questions.

Clear communication, patience, and comfort with technology are essential — many patients are new to virtual care, and CMAs are often the ones guiding them through it.

Virtual CMA Workflow

A Remote Certified Medical Assistant may follow a structured workflow across each clinical encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Schedule Pre-Visit Intake Chart Preparation Visit Support Post-Visit Follow-Up Document Encounter Escalate If Needed

Scope of Practice & Escalation

Medical assistants work under the direction of a licensed provider, per state scope-of-practice rules and employer protocols. CMAs do not diagnose, prescribe, provide clinical advice independently, or triage symptoms clinically. Any clinical question, symptom, or concern beyond the CMA scope is escalated to the appropriate licensed clinician immediately.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or CCMA) applicable to the specific assignment, or relevant clinical support experience.
  • Previous experience in outpatient, primary care, or specialty practice settings.
  • Strong patient communication and documentation skills.
  • Comfortable with virtual care platforms and EHR systems.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring clinical escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing the day's virtual visit schedule — checking patient names, visit reasons, and any pre-visit questionnaires or portal messages.

You'll conduct pre-visit intake by phone or secure message — confirming medications, updating medical history, and gathering symptom details so the provider has a clear picture going into the visit.

During visits, you may support the provider by reviewing charts, documenting key details, and coordinating next steps in real time. Between visits, you'll follow up with patients on lab orders, referrals, and prescription requests.

Throughout the day, you'll document each interaction accurately and escalate any clinical concern to the appropriate team member.

The role combines patient intake, chart support, documentation, care coordination, patient education, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike in-person medical assisting, virtual CMA work focuses on digital workflows — preparation, documentation, coordination, and patient communication through technology.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote clinical support delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Telehealth platforms
Electronic health records
Patient portals
