Remote Asthma Educator (AE-C)

Provide asthma self-management education, inhaler technique education, and asthma action plan support — from home.

$26–$46 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects Certified Asthma Educators (AE-C) with opportunities across virtual asthma care, asthma self-management education, and remote asthma support.

We are seeking qualified Asthma Educators (AE-C) for remote opportunities supporting telehealth respiratory companies, health systems, pulmonology practices, allergy practices, managed care organizations, and healthcare organizations.

A Remote Asthma Educator (AE-C) provides asthma self-management education, inhaler technique education, and asthma action plan support for patients. Working within their AE-C scope, the asthma educator conducts asthma assessments, delivers asthma self-management education, provides inhaler and device technique education, and supports patients in achieving asthma control through secure telehealth platforms.

This position is well-suited to an experienced asthma educator with asthma self-management education knowledge, inhaler technique education experience, and AE-C certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful asthma education with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific asthma specialty, patient population, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote asthma educator jobs, work-from-home AE-C jobs, virtual asthma education jobs, telehealth asthma educator, remote certified asthma educator, or asthma self-management education jobs.

Structured Virtual Asthma Education with Predictable Hours

Virtual asthma education runs on scheduled patient education sessions and asthma documentation workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting early-morning or early-evening patient sessions. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some educators work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Asthma Educator (AE-C), you may provide asthma education across a range of virtual asthma encounters.

  • Conduct asthma assessments — completing asthma assessments for new and returning patients.
  • Deliver asthma self-management education — delivering asthma self-management education based on national guidelines.
  • Provide inhaler technique education — educating patients on proper inhaler technique (MDI, DPI, SMI).
  • Provide spacer and nebulizer education — educating patients on spacer and nebulizer use.
  • Support asthma action plan development — supporting asthma action plan development and review.
  • Support asthma trigger identification — educating patients on asthma triggers and trigger avoidance.
  • Support asthma medication education — educating patients on controller and rescue medications.
  • Support peak flow monitoring — educating patients on peak flow monitoring and self-monitoring.
  • Support asthma control assessment — supporting asthma control assessment and symptom tracking.
  • Support pediatric asthma education — providing pediatric asthma education and family-based support.
  • Provide behavior change support — providing asthma-specific behavior change support and goal setting.
  • Document asthma education accurately in the asthma documentation system and EHR.
  • Coordinate with providers, respiratory therapists, and care teams as needed.
  • Support asthma education quality — maintaining asthma education quality and effectiveness.
  • Support patient engagement — supporting patient engagement and asthma self-management.
  • Participate in asthma education quality improvement and program improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of asthma guidelines (NAEPP, GINA), asthma devices, and evidence-based asthma care.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual asthma education work.

Virtual Asthma Educator Focus

Virtual asthma education is a growing area of healthcare — driven by increased demand for asthma self-management education, expanded telehealth coverage for asthma care, and the recognition that asthma educators improve patient asthma outcomes through asthma self-management education. Virtual asthma educators extend asthma care reach, support patients in their communities, and improve asthma outcomes across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual asthma education may focus on:

Asthma self-management education
Inhaler technique education
Asthma action plans
Asthma trigger management
Pediatric asthma education
Asthma education compliance

The asthma educator's role is to provide asthma education within their AE-C scope — including asthma assessment, asthma self-management education, inhaler and device technique education, asthma action plan support, documentation, and asthma education quality. Clinical decisions, medication adjustments, and clinical management recommendations remain with the supervising clinical team; the asthma educator provides asthma education within their AE-C scope and coordinates with providers, respiratory therapists, and care teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on asthma self-management education, inhaler technique education, asthma action plan support, documentation, and asthma education quality.

Inhaler Technique Education & Asthma Action Plan Support

Effective virtual asthma education depends on strong asthma self-management education knowledge and inhaler technique education expertise — the asthma educator's clinical skills and patient-centered education approach determine how to help patients achieve asthma control through effective asthma education.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support virtual asthma education by:

  • Conducting asthma assessments — asthma assessments and re-assessments.
  • Delivering asthma self-management education — evidence-based asthma education.
  • Providing inhaler technique education — MDI, DPI, and SMI technique.
  • Providing spacer and nebulizer education — spacer and nebulizer use.
  • Supporting asthma action plan development — asthma action plan development and review.
  • Supporting asthma trigger identification — asthma triggers and trigger avoidance.
  • Supporting asthma medication education — controller and rescue medications.
  • Supporting peak flow monitoring — peak flow monitoring and self-monitoring.
  • Supporting asthma control assessment — asthma control and symptom tracking.
  • Supporting pediatric asthma education — pediatric asthma and family-based support.
  • Providing behavior change support — asthma-specific behavior change and goals.
  • Supporting asthma education quality improvement and program improvement.

Clinical expertise, patient-centered education skills, and clear communication are essential — asthma educators are the asthma education professionals who help patients achieve asthma control through effective asthma education.

Virtual Asthma Educator Workflow

A Remote Asthma Educator (AE-C) may follow a structured workflow across each virtual asthma education encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Asthma Referral Conduct Asthma Assessment Deliver Asthma Education Inhaler Technique Education Support Asthma Action Plan Monitor & Follow Up Escalate If Needed

Clinical Documentation & HIPAA Compliance

Virtual asthma education directly affects patient asthma outcomes, patient safety, and clinical documentation. All asthma education must comply with AE-C scope of practice, state licensure requirements, national asthma guidelines (NAEPP, GINA), and organizational clinical policy. Clinical concerns requiring clinical leadership input, patient safety concerns, or asthma education issues affecting patient outcomes must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. Asthma educators must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual asthma education work.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) credential required.
  • Previous experience as an asthma educator, respiratory therapist with asthma education experience, RN with asthma education experience, or pharmacist with asthma education experience.
  • Strong asthma self-management education knowledge, inhaler technique education experience, and asthma action plan development skills.

  • Strong communication, patient empathy, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing referrals, scheduled asthma education sessions, and patient asthma action plans — checking virtual asthma education priorities and patient caseload.

You'll conduct asthma assessments — completing asthma assessments for new and returning patients, including asthma history, medication use, symptom frequency, and self-management behaviors.

You'll deliver asthma self-management education and inhaler technique education — educating patients on asthma triggers, controller and rescue medications, and proper inhaler technique using virtual demonstration and video tools.

Between education sessions, you'll support asthma action plan development, peak flow monitoring, and behavior change support, and document asthma education accurately in asthma documentation systems and EHR.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with providers, respiratory therapists, and care teams, and support asthma education compliance with AE-C scope, state licensure, and national asthma guidelines.

The role combines asthma self-management education, inhaler technique education, asthma action plan support, documentation, and asthma education quality.

Unlike Diabetes Educator work, which focuses on diabetes self-management education, asthma educator work focuses specifically on asthma self-management education and inhaler technique — you're the asthma education professional who helps patients achieve asthma control through effective asthma education.
