Remote Genetic Counselor

Provide virtual genetic counseling — hereditary cancer risk assessment, genetic testing coordination, and genomic counseling — from home.

$32–$55 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects genetic counselors with opportunities across virtual genetic counseling, hereditary cancer risk assessment, and genetic testing coordination.

We are seeking qualified Genetic Counselors (CGC) for remote opportunities supporting telehealth genetic counseling companies, health systems, oncology practices, genetic testing laboratories, and healthcare organizations.

A Remote Genetic Counselor provides virtual genetic counseling, hereditary risk assessment, and genetic testing coordination for patients. Working within their CGC scope, the genetic counselor conducts pre-test genetic counseling, assesses hereditary cancer and other genetic risks, coordinates genetic testing, communicates genetic test results, and supports patients in understanding genetic risk and clinical management options.

This position is well-suited to an experienced genetic counselor with hereditary cancer risk assessment knowledge, genetic testing coordination experience, and ABGC certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful genetic counseling with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific genetics specialty, patient population, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote genetic counselor jobs, work-from-home genetic counselor jobs, virtual genetic counseling jobs, telegenetics jobs, remote cancer genetic counselor jobs, or telehealth genetic counselor roles.

Structured Virtual Genetic Counseling with Predictable Hours

Virtual genetic counseling runs on scheduled patient counseling sessions and genetic testing coordination workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting early-morning or early-evening patient sessions. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some genetic counselors work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Genetic Counselor, you may provide genetic counseling across a range of virtual genetics encounters.

  • Conduct pre-test genetic counseling — completing pre-test genetic counseling for patients referred for genetic evaluation.
  • Collect and assess family history — collecting detailed family history and assessing hereditary risk.
  • Assess hereditary cancer risk — assessing hereditary cancer risk using validated risk models and guidelines.
  • Assess other genetic risks — assessing cardiovascular, prenatal, pediatric, and other genetic risks.
  • Provide genetic education — providing education on genetics, genetic testing, and risk implications.
  • Coordinate genetic testing — coordinating genetic testing ordering with genetic testing laboratories.
  • Discuss genetic testing options — discussing genetic testing options and informed consent with patients.
  • Communicate genetic test results — communicating genetic test results and clinical implications to patients.
  • Support post-test counseling — supporting post-test genetic counseling and clinical management recommendations.
  • Support family member testing — supporting cascade testing for family members as indicated.
  • Coordinate with providers — coordinating with oncologists, primary care, and specialty providers as needed.
  • Support genetic counseling documentation — documenting genetic counseling accurately in the genetics documentation system and EHR.
  • Support genetic counseling quality — maintaining genetic counseling quality and patient satisfaction.
  • Support genetic counseling compliance — maintaining genetic counseling compliance with ABGC, state licensure, and organizational requirements.
  • Support patient engagement — supporting patient engagement and genetic counseling follow-up.
  • Participate in genetic counseling quality improvement and program improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of genetics, hereditary risk assessment, genetic testing guidelines, and NCCN guidelines.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual genetic counseling work.

Virtual Genetic Counselor Focus

Virtual genetic counseling is a growing area of healthcare — driven by increased demand for genetic counseling, expanded telehealth coverage for genetic counseling, and the recognition that genetic counselors improve patient outcomes through hereditary risk assessment and genetic testing coordination. Virtual genetic counselors extend genetics reach, support patients in their communities, and improve genetic counseling quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual genetic counseling may focus on:

Hereditary cancer genetics
Cardiovascular genetics
Prenatal genetics
Pediatric genetics
Pharmacogenomics
Genetic counseling compliance

The genetic counselor's role is to provide genetic counseling within their CGC scope — including pre-test genetic counseling, family history assessment, hereditary risk assessment, genetic testing coordination, test result disclosure, post-test genetic counseling, and genetic counseling documentation. Clinical decisions and clinical management recommendations remain with the supervising clinical team; the genetic counselor provides genetic counseling within their CGC scope and coordinates with oncologists, primary care, and specialty providers.

This structure keeps the role focused on hereditary risk assessment, genetic testing coordination, patient education, documentation, and genetic counseling quality.

Hereditary Cancer Risk Assessment & Genetic Testing Coordination Support

Effective virtual genetic counseling depends on strong hereditary cancer risk assessment skills and genetic testing coordination expertise — the genetic counselor's clinical skills and patient-centered counseling approach determine how to help patients understand genetic risk and clinical management options.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support virtual genetic counseling by:

  • Conducting pre-test genetic counseling — pre-test counseling for referred patients.
  • Collecting family history — detailed family history and hereditary risk assessment.
  • Assessing hereditary cancer risk — validated risk models and guidelines.
  • Assessing other genetic risks — cardiovascular, prenatal, pediatric, and other risks.
  • Providing genetic education — genetics, testing, and risk implications.
  • Coordinating genetic testing — genetic testing ordering and coordination.
  • Discussing testing options — testing options and informed consent.
  • Communicating test results — test results and clinical implications.
  • Supporting post-test counseling — post-test counseling and management recommendations.
  • Supporting family member testing — cascade testing for family members.
  • Documenting genetic counseling — genetic counseling documentation.
  • Supporting genetic counseling quality improvement and program improvement.

Clinical expertise, patient-centered counseling skills, and clear communication are essential — genetic counselors are the genetics professionals who help patients understand genetic risk and clinical management options.

Virtual Genetic Counselor Workflow

A Remote Genetic Counselor may follow a structured workflow across each virtual genetic counseling encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

All genetic counseling must comply with ABGC scope of practice, state licensure requirements, NCCN guidelines, and organizational clinical policy. Clinical concerns requiring clinical leadership input, patient safety concerns, or genetic counseling issues affecting patient outcomes must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. Genetic counselors must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual genetic counseling work.

Required Qualifications

  • Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) credential through ABGC required.
  • Active state licensure where applicable (or licensure eligibility).
  • Previous experience as a genetic counselor in clinical, oncology, or telehealth settings.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing referrals, scheduled genetic counseling sessions, and pending genetic test results — checking virtual genetic counseling priorities and patient caseload.

You'll conduct pre-test genetic counseling — completing pre-test genetic counseling for patients referred for genetic evaluation, including family history assessment and hereditary risk assessment.

You'll coordinate genetic testing and communicate results — coordinating genetic testing ordering with labs, discussing genetic testing options, and communicating genetic test results to patients.

Between counseling sessions, you'll support cascade testing, care team coordination, and genetic counseling documentation, and document genetic counseling accurately in genetics documentation systems and EHR.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with oncologists, primary care, and specialty providers, and support genetic counseling compliance with ABGC scope, state licensure, and NCCN guidelines.

The role combines hereditary risk assessment, genetic testing coordination, patient education, documentation, and genetic counseling quality.

Unlike Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist work, which focuses on nutrition and lifestyle, genetic counselor work focuses specifically on hereditary risk assessment and genetic testing coordination — you're the genetics professional who helps patients understand genetic risk and clinical management options.
