Remote Virtual Urgent Care Nurse

Support on-demand virtual urgent care — acute episodic care support, rapid clinical assessment, and virtual visit support from home.

$32–$55 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects registered nurses with opportunities across virtual urgent care, on-demand virtual care, and acute episodic nursing.

We are seeking qualified Virtual Urgent Care Nurses for remote opportunities supporting virtual urgent care companies, health systems, health plans, employer health programs, and digital health organizations.

A Remote Virtual Urgent Care Nurse supports on-demand virtual urgent care — acute episodic care support, rapid clinical assessment, and virtual visit support. Working within their state licensure and clinical scope of practice, the virtual urgent care nurse supports patients with acute, non-emergent concerns like upper respiratory infections, urinary symptoms, minor injuries, rashes, and other episodic conditions.

This position is well-suited to a registered nurse with urgent care, emergency, ambulatory, or virtual acute care experience who wants to practice in a virtual setting — providing rapid clinical support for patients with acute, non-emergent needs.

The specific virtual urgent care program, patient population, clinical model, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote virtual urgent care nurse jobs, work-from-home urgent care RN jobs, remote urgent care nursing jobs, on-demand virtual care RN, or remote acute care RN roles.

On-Demand Virtual Urgent Care with Shift-Based Coverage

Virtual urgent care nursing runs on shift-based coverage and on-demand patient volumes, since virtual urgent care operates across extended hours. Programs typically offer daytime, evening, overnight, or weekend shifts to cover on-demand patient demand. Many programs offer flexible 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts, and some RNs work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Virtual Urgent Care Nurse, you may support patients across a range of acute episodic encounters.

  • Support on-demand virtual urgent care visits alongside providers — pre-visit prep, visit support, and post-visit follow-up.
  • Conduct rapid clinical assessments of acute, non-emergent concerns — symptom onset, duration, severity, and associated symptoms.
  • Support virtual urgent care visits for common acute concerns — upper respiratory infections, urinary symptoms, minor injuries, rashes, and other episodic conditions.
  • Support point-of-care guidance for patients in the home — home testing, wound care, and monitoring instructions.
  • Provide patient education on acute conditions, symptom management, and self-care.
  • Reinforce provider care plans and clinical instructions — medications, follow-up, and red-flag warnings.
  • Support medication understanding and adherence.
  • Coordinate with providers, urgent care teams, and referral resources as needed.
  • Document each patient encounter accurately in the EHR.
  • Identify patients with escalating symptoms or unmet needs and escalate to the appropriate clinical team.
  • Identify emergency-level concerns and direct patients to 911 or emergency services as clinically indicated.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary care teams — providers, care managers, and specialists.
  • Participate in virtual urgent care quality improvement, clinical review, and education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of acute care guidelines, virtual urgent care best practices, and licensure requirements.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual care interactions.

Virtual Urgent Care Nursing Focus

Virtual urgent care is a rapidly growing area of clinical practice — driven by patient demand for on-demand care, payer coverage for telehealth, and the recognition that many urgent care visits can be handled safely and effectively through virtual channels. Virtual urgent care nurses extend clinical reach, improve access to care, and support patients with acute, non-emergent concerns.

Depending on the program, virtual urgent care nursing may focus on:

On-demand virtual visits
Rapid clinical assessment
Acute illness support
Minor injury support
Medication support
Emergency escalation

The virtual urgent care nurse's role is to provide virtual urgent care nursing within their licensure and scope of practice — including rapid assessment, acute episodic care support, patient education, medication support, documentation, and emergency escalation. Clinical decisions, medication changes, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating providers; the virtual urgent care nurse supports the patient's acute care encounter and coordinates with the care team.

This structure keeps the role focused on rapid clinical assessment, acute episodic care support, patient education, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Acute Episodic Care Support & Patient Education

Effective virtual urgent care nursing depends on rapid clinical assessment and patient education — the RN's clinical judgment and communication skills determine how to help each patient through their acute concern.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support patients by:

  • Conducting rapid clinical assessments — symptom onset, duration, severity, and associated symptoms.
  • Supporting patients with acute non-emergent concerns — upper respiratory infections, urinary symptoms, rashes, and minor injuries.
  • Providing patient education on acute conditions, symptom management, and self-care.
  • Supporting medication understanding and adherence — including newly prescribed medications.
  • Reinforcing red-flag warnings — when to seek emergency care.
  • Supporting point-of-care guidance — home testing, wound care, and monitoring.
  • Coordinating care with providers, urgent care teams, and referral resources.
  • Documenting each patient encounter accurately and consistently.
  • Identifying emergency-level concerns and directing patients to 911 or emergency services immediately.

Clinical judgment, clear communication, and rapid assessment skills are essential — virtual urgent care nursing requires you to quickly assess, support, and appropriately escalate in a fast-moving virtual encounter.

Virtual Urgent Care Workflow

A Remote Virtual Urgent Care Nurse may follow a structured workflow across each virtual urgent care encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Patient Rapid Assessment Support Virtual Visit Educate & Support Coordinate Care Document Encounter Escalate If Needed

Emergency Escalation & Patient Safety

If a patient presents with emergency-level symptoms — including chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe respiratory distress, or another emergency — the RN must follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately, including directing the patient to call 911 or seek emergency care. Virtual urgent care does not replace emergency care.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license in good standing in the state(s) required by the employer.
  • Previous clinical experience in urgent care, emergency, ambulatory care, or virtual acute care nursing.
  • Strong rapid clinical assessment, acute episodic care, and virtual triage skills.
  • Comfortable with on-demand telehealth platforms, EHR systems, and virtual urgent care workflows.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring emergency or clinical escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet suitable for real-time video and a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging into the virtual urgent care platform, checking in with your shift lead or supervisor, and reviewing any active patient notes or follow-up items.

You'll support on-demand virtual urgent care visits — pre-visit prep, rapid clinical assessment, visit support, and post-visit follow-up. You'll support patients with acute, non-emergent concerns like upper respiratory infections, urinary symptoms, rashes, and minor injuries.

Between encounters, you'll provide patient education, reinforce care plans, coordinate care with providers and urgent care teams, and document each patient encounter accurately.

Throughout the day, you'll identify emergency-level concerns and follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately — directing patients to 911 or emergency care as clinically indicated.

The role combines rapid clinical assessment, acute episodic care support, patient education, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Unlike virtual triage, which focuses on directing patients to the right level of care, virtual urgent care focuses on the care encounter itself — you're the RN supporting the patient's acute, non-emergent concern through a virtual visit.
