Remote Virtual PACU Nurse

Provide post-anesthesia recovery support, airway monitoring, and post-surgical patient education — from home.

$34–$58 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects PACU and perianesthesia registered nurses with opportunities across virtual post-anesthesia recovery, telehealth surgical recovery, and remote PACU programs.

We are seeking qualified Virtual PACU Nurses for remote opportunities supporting virtual PACU programs, telehealth surgical recovery companies, health systems, ambulatory surgery centers, and digital perioperative organizations.

A Remote Virtual PACU Nurse provides post-anesthesia recovery support, airway monitoring, and post-surgical patient education. Working within their state licensure and clinical scope of practice, the virtual PACU nurse supports patients recovering from anesthesia — monitoring airway and respiratory status, assessing post-anesthesia recovery milestones, supporting pain and nausea management, and providing post-surgical education to patients and caregivers.

This position is well-suited to an experienced PACU RN with perianesthesia, post-anesthesia recovery, or telehealth surgical recovery experience who wants to practice in a virtual setting — providing meaningful clinical perianesthesia support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific virtual PACU program, surgical specialties covered, clinical model, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote virtual PACU nurse jobs, work-from-home PACU nurse jobs, remote perianesthesia nurse jobs, virtual post-anesthesia recovery RN, or telehealth PACU nurse roles.

Structured Virtual PACU Care with Predictable Hours

Virtual PACU nursing runs on scheduled post-anesthesia follow-ups and patient outreach blocks, giving your clinical day predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime, evening, or weekend coverage to support recovery after surgical cases. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour shifts, and some RNs work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Virtual PACU Nurse, you may support post-surgical patients across a range of virtual post-anesthesia encounters.

  • Support Phase I post-anesthesia recovery — monitoring airway, respiratory status, and emergence from anesthesia.
  • Support Phase II recovery — assessing readiness for discharge home or to the next level of care.
  • Support airway assessment — identifying airway compromise, hypoventilation, or respiratory depression.
  • Support post-anesthesia monitoring — assessing vital signs, oxygen saturation, and level of consciousness.
  • Support Aldrete score review — evaluating readiness for transition from PACU.
  • Support pain management — assessing pain level and reinforcing provider pain management plans.
  • Support post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) — assessing symptoms and reinforcing antiemetic plans.
  • Support post-surgical complication monitoring — identifying bleeding, infection, or other post-op concerns.
  • Provide post-surgical patient education — wound care, activity restrictions, and warning signs.
  • Support discharge instructions — reinforcing provider discharge education.
  • Coordinate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and PACU teams.
  • Document each virtual PACU encounter accurately in the EHR or virtual PACU platform.
  • Support post-op follow-up — post-discharge check-ins and care coordination.
  • Escalate post-anesthesia or post-surgical concerns to the surgical team promptly.
  • Participate in virtual PACU quality improvement, clinical review, and education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of perianesthesia care guidelines, post-anesthesia protocols, and licensure requirements.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual PACU interactions.

Virtual PACU Nursing Focus

Virtual PACU nursing is a growing area of perianesthesia practice — driven by increased demand for post-anesthesia support, expanded telehealth coverage for surgical recovery, and the recognition that PACU nurses help surgical patients recover safely after anesthesia. Virtual PACU nurses extend perianesthesia care reach, improve surgical outcomes, and support surgical patients from Phase I recovery through Phase II discharge.

Depending on the program, virtual PACU nursing may focus on:

Airway monitoring
Post-anesthesia monitoring
Aldrete score support
Pain management support
PONV support
Discharge criteria support

The virtual PACU nurse's role is to provide virtual perianesthesia nursing within their licensure and scope of practice — including post-anesthesia assessment, airway monitoring, recovery milestone assessment, pain and PONV support, patient education, documentation, and appropriate clinical escalation. Clinical decisions, medication changes, and discharge decisions belong to the treating anesthesiologist, surgeon, or the PACU team; the virtual PACU nurse supports the patient's post-anesthesia recovery and coordinates with the perianesthesia care team.

This structure keeps the role focused on virtual post-anesthesia recovery, airway monitoring, patient education, documentation, and appropriate clinical escalation.

Airway Monitoring & Post-Anesthesia Recovery Support

Effective virtual PACU nursing depends on strong airway monitoring and post-anesthesia recovery support — the RN's clinical judgment and perianesthesia expertise determine how to help each post-surgical patient recover safely.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support patients by:

  • Supporting Phase I post-anesthesia recovery — airway, respiratory status, and emergence.
  • Supporting Phase II recovery — readiness for discharge or transition.
  • Supporting airway assessment — identifying airway compromise, hypoventilation, or respiratory depression.
  • Supporting post-anesthesia monitoring — vital signs, oxygen saturation, and level of consciousness.
  • Supporting Aldrete score review — readiness for transition from PACU.
  • Supporting pain management — assessing pain and reinforcing provider pain management plans.
  • Supporting post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) — assessing symptoms and reinforcing antiemetic plans.
  • Supporting post-surgical complication monitoring — bleeding, infection, or other post-op concerns.
  • Providing post-surgical patient education — wound care, activity restrictions, and warning signs.
  • Supporting discharge instructions — reinforcing provider discharge education.
  • Coordinating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and PACU teams.
  • Documenting each virtual PACU encounter accurately and consistently.
  • Escalating post-anesthesia or post-surgical concerns to the surgical team promptly.

Clinical judgment, perianesthesia expertise, and clear communication are essential — virtual PACU nurses are the RNs who help surgical patients recover safely from anesthesia and transition smoothly to the next phase of care.

Virtual PACU Workflow

A Remote Virtual PACU Nurse may follow a structured workflow across each virtual PACU encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Surgical Patient Info Assess Post-Anesthesia Status Monitor Airway & Vitals Support Pain & PONV Support Discharge Criteria Educate Patient Document & Escalate If Needed

Clinical Escalation & Surgical Safety

If a patient presents with clinical concerns during the virtual PACU encounter — airway compromise, respiratory depression, uncontrolled pain, severe PONV, bleeding, or a change in clinical status — the virtual PACU nurse must follow the employer's clinical escalation protocol immediately, including contacting the anesthesiologist, surgeon, or the appropriate clinical team. Virtual PACU care does not replace emergency care or in-person PACU care when needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license in good standing in the state(s) required by the employer.
  • Extensive clinical experience in PACU, perianesthesia, post-anesthesia recovery, or telehealth surgical recovery nursing.
  • Strong airway assessment, post-anesthesia monitoring, and post-surgical patient education skills.
  • Comfortable with telehealth platforms, perianesthesia protocols, and EHR systems.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring clinical escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet suitable for real-time video and a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing your scheduled virtual PACU patients — checking surgical procedure, anesthesia type, post-op orders, and any post-op concerns from the surgical team.

You'll conduct virtual PACU follow-ups — assessing post-anesthesia recovery, monitoring airway and vital status, and reviewing recovery milestones against Aldrete criteria.

Between follow-ups, you'll support pain management and PONV, reinforce provider pain and antiemetic plans, and provide post-surgical patient education — wound care, activity restrictions, and warning signs.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and PACU teams, document each virtual PACU encounter accurately, and follow up with patients who may have post-op concerns.

The role combines post-anesthesia recovery support, airway monitoring, pain and PONV support, patient education, documentation, and appropriate clinical escalation.

Unlike virtual perioperative nursing, which focuses on pre-op preparation and education, virtual PACU nursing focuses on post-anesthesia recovery and recovery milestone assessment — you're the perianesthesia RN who helps surgical patients recover safely from anesthesia.
