Remote Virtual Emergency Department Nurse

Provide remote ED triage, emergency assessment support, and virtual emergency care coordination — from home.

$36–$58 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects emergency department registered nurses with opportunities across virtual ED, tele-emergency nursing, and remote emergency care programs.

We are seeking qualified Virtual Emergency Department Nurses for remote opportunities supporting virtual ED programs, tele-emergency services, health systems, and digital emergency care organizations.

A Remote Virtual Emergency Department Nurse provides remote ED triage, emergency assessment support, and virtual emergency care coordination. Working within their state licensure and clinical scope of practice, the virtual ED nurse conducts virtual emergency triage, applies emergency severity protocols, identifies high-acuity presentations, and coordinates emergency care with ED physicians, EMS, and hospital teams.

This position is well-suited to an experienced emergency department RN with ED, emergency triage, or tele-emergency experience who wants to practice in a virtual setting — providing meaningful clinical emergency support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific virtual ED program, patient population, clinical model, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote virtual ED nurse jobs, work-from-home emergency department nurse jobs, remote emergency triage nurse jobs, virtual ED RN, or tele-emergency nurse roles.

Structured Virtual ED Coverage with Predictable Hours

Virtual emergency department nursing runs on scheduled shift coverage and on-demand patient volumes, because emergency care operates 24/7. Programs typically offer daytime, evening, overnight, or weekend coverage to support patients around the clock. Many programs offer flexible 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts, and some RNs work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Virtual Emergency Department Nurse, you may support patients and clinical teams across a range of virtual emergency encounters.

  • Conduct virtual ED triage — assessing chief complaint, symptom acuity, and urgency.
  • Apply emergency severity protocols — ESI (Emergency Severity Index) or employer-specific triage protocols.
  • Identify high-acuity emergency presentations — chest pain, stroke symptoms, respiratory distress, sepsis, trauma.
  • Support emergency assessment — vital signs interpretation, symptom assessment, and clinical history.
  • Determine appropriate level of emergency care — virtual care, urgent care, ED, or 911 activation.
  • Activate emergency services — directing patients to 911, EMS, or ED care when clinically indicated.
  • Support virtual ED encounters — supporting emergency physicians with clinical data and coordination.
  • Support EMS coordination — providing clinical information to EMS teams as needed.
  • Support ED physician consultation — providing rapid clinical assessment for complex patients.
  • Coordinate with ED teams, hospitalists, and specialists as needed.
  • Document emergency encounters accurately in the EHR or virtual ED platform.
  • Escalate emergency concerns to 911, EMS, or emergency services immediately when clinically indicated.
  • Support patients with chronic conditions — symptom assessment during emergency encounters.
  • Provide patient education on emergency care, warning signs, and follow-up.
  • Participate in virtual ED quality improvement, clinical review, and education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emergency care guidelines, triage protocols, and licensure requirements.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual ED interactions.

Virtual Emergency Department Nursing Focus

Virtual emergency department nursing is a growing area of emergency practice — driven by increased demand for emergency care access, expanded telehealth coverage for emergency triage, and the recognition that virtual ED nurses help patients get the right emergency care at the right time. Virtual ED nurses extend emergency care reach, improve emergency triage accuracy, and support emergency care coordination across health systems.

Depending on the program, virtual ED nursing may focus on:

Virtual ED triage
Emergency severity assessment
EMS coordination
Emergency assessment support
ED physician support
Emergency care coordination

The virtual ED nurse's role is to provide virtual emergency nursing within their licensure and scope of practice — including virtual ED triage, emergency severity assessment, emergency care coordination, patient education, documentation, and emergency escalation. Clinical decisions, medication changes, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating emergency physicians; the virtual ED nurse supports the patient's emergency encounter and coordinates with the emergency care team.

This structure keeps the role focused on virtual ED triage, emergency assessment, level-of-care direction, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Emergency Triage & Severity Assessment

Effective virtual ED nursing depends on strong emergency triage and rapid severity assessment — the RN's clinical judgment and emergency expertise determine how to help each patient access the right emergency care.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support patients by:

  • Conducting virtual ED triage — chief complaint, symptom acuity, and urgency.
  • Applying emergency severity protocols — ESI or employer-specific triage protocols.
  • Identifying high-acuity emergency presentations — chest pain, stroke symptoms, respiratory distress, sepsis, trauma.
  • Supporting emergency assessment — vital signs interpretation, symptom assessment, and clinical history.
  • Determining appropriate level of emergency care — virtual care, urgent care, ED, or 911 activation.
  • Activating emergency services — directing patients to 911, EMS, or ED care.
  • Supporting ED physician consultation — providing rapid clinical assessment for complex patients.
  • Supporting EMS coordination — providing clinical information to EMS teams as needed.
  • Documenting emergency encounters accurately and consistently.
  • Escalating emergency concerns to 911, EMS, or emergency services immediately.
  • Providing patient education on emergency care, warning signs, and follow-up.

Clinical judgment, emergency expertise, and clear communication are essential — virtual ED nurses are the RNs who help patients navigate emergency decisions and access the right emergency care in real time.

Virtual Emergency Department Workflow

A Remote Virtual Emergency Department Nurse may follow a structured workflow across each virtual emergency encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Answer Contact Identify Patient Conduct ED Triage Apply Severity Protocol Determine Level of Care Coordinate Emergency Care Document & Escalate If Needed

Emergency Escalation & Patient Safety

If a patient presents with emergency-level symptoms — chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe respiratory distress, sepsis, trauma, or another emergency — the virtual ED nurse must follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately, including directing the patient to call 911 or seek emergency care. Virtual emergency nursing does not replace emergency care.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license in good standing in the state(s) required by the employer.
  • Extensive clinical experience in emergency nursing, emergency department, or tele-emergency nursing.
  • Strong emergency assessment, rapid clinical triage, and emergency care coordination skills.
  • Comfortable with tele-emergency platforms, EHR systems, and virtual ED workflows.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring emergency or clinical escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet suitable for real-time video and a private workspace suitable for confidential patient encounters.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging into the virtual ED platform, checking in with your shift lead, and reviewing any active case notes or follow-up items.

You'll answer virtual ED triage calls, chats, or video requests as they come in — conducting emergency assessments, applying ESI or employer-specific severity protocols, and determining each patient's level of emergency care.

Between encounters, you'll document each virtual ED interaction accurately, coordinate with ED physicians, EMS teams, and hospital teams, and follow up with patients who may need additional support after triage.

Throughout the day, you'll identify emergency-level concerns and follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately — directing patients to 911, EMS, or ED care as clinically indicated.

The role combines virtual ED triage, emergency severity assessment, level-of-care direction, emergency care coordination, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Unlike virtual ICU nursing, which focuses on continuous ICU monitoring, virtual ED nursing focuses on rapid emergency triage and coordination — you're the emergency RN who helps patients make the right emergency care decision in real time.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote tele-emergency delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Tele-emergency systems
Telehealth platforms
EHR / EMR
Triage software
Secure messaging systems
Clinical decision support

Candidates should have a stable internet connection suitable for real-time video and triage calls, a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations, and comfort with multiple digital platforms.
