Remote Coding Quality Reviewer

Perform coding quality reviews, provide coder feedback, and support coding accuracy and quality improvement — all from home.

$28–$48 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects certified coding quality reviewers with opportunities across remote coding quality review, coding QA, and coding education.

We are seeking qualified Coding Quality Reviewers for remote opportunities supporting health systems, physician practices, coding companies, and healthcare revenue cycle organizations.

A Remote Coding Quality Reviewer performs coding quality reviews, provides coder feedback, and supports coding accuracy and quality improvement. Working alongside coding leadership, coding education teams, and coder teams, the coding quality reviewer ensures that coders maintain high coding accuracy, follow coding guidelines, and improve over time through structured feedback and education.

This position is well-suited to a certified coding quality reviewer or experienced medical coder who wants to work from home — providing coding quality review and coder education work with schedule flexibility and without the demands of an on-site coding quality department.

The specific coding quality program, service line focus, quality review software, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote coding quality reviewer jobs, work-from-home coding QA jobs, remote coding quality assurance reviewer, remote coding quality specialist, or remote coder quality jobs roles.

Flexible Quality Review Work with Predictable Hours

Remote coding quality review runs on flexible, review-based workflows — coding quality reviewers work through assigned quality review samples, often with flexible daily start and end times as long as review deadlines and quality expectations are met. Many teams offer flexible 8-hour days, and some coding quality reviewers work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no clinical emergencies, no overnight shifts, and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Coding Quality Reviewer, you may support healthcare organizations across the full coding quality lifecycle.

  • Perform coding quality reviews on assigned samples of coded records — inpatient, outpatient, physician, or specialty-specific.
  • Review clinical documentation and coding to verify coding accuracy and coding compliance.
  • Identify coding errors, coding discrepancies, and areas for coder improvement.
  • Evaluate coding against ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M coding guidelines.
  • Evaluate CPT modifier usage and E/M coding accuracy.
  • Document quality review findings in the quality review platform accurately and consistently.
  • Provide coding feedback to coders through written feedback and one-on-one education.
  • Support coder education through feedback sessions, coding guidance, and documentation of recurring issues.
  • Participate in coder training and coding education activities.
  • Track quality review findings, error trends, and coding accuracy rates.
  • Coordinate with coding leadership on quality trends and education priorities.
  • Support coding quality metrics and coding quality dashboards.
  • Participate in coding quality team meetings and quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, payer rules, and regulatory updates.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all quality review activities.

Coding Quality Focus

Coding quality review is the process of independently reviewing coded records to verify coding accuracy, coding quality, and coder performance — and to support coder education and improvement. Coding quality reviewers are essential to coding accuracy, coder development, and coding quality improvement.

Depending on the program, coding quality review may focus on:

Coding accuracy review
E/M quality review
Surgical coding review
Inpatient coding review
Outpatient coding review
Coder education and feedback

The coding quality reviewer's role is to independently review coding accuracy, coding quality, and coder performance within quality review methodology and coding guidelines — documenting findings, providing coder feedback, and supporting coder education. Clinical decisions, treatment decisions, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating providers; the coding quality reviewer verifies that coded records accurately reflect documented clinical information and supports coder improvement.

This structure keeps the role focused on coding accuracy review, coding quality metrics, coder feedback, coder education, and appropriate escalation.

Coder Feedback & Coding Education

Coding quality review success depends on strong coder feedback and coding education — using quality review findings to improve coding accuracy across the coding team.

You may support coder feedback and coding education by:

  • Documenting quality review findings in the quality review platform accurately and consistently.
  • Providing written coding feedback to individual coders.
  • Conducting one-on-one and small-group coder education sessions.
  • Identifying coding error trends and recurring coding issues.
  • Supporting coder training with real-world quality review examples.
  • Coordinating with coding leadership on education priorities.
  • Tracking coding accuracy rates and quality review outcomes.
  • Supporting coding quality improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinating with CDI, compliance, and coding leadership on recurring findings.
  • Supporting new coder onboarding and coding education programs.

Quality review methodology, coding knowledge, and coder communication are essential — coding quality reviewers are the professionals who ensure coding quality and support coder development.

Coding Quality Review Workflow

A Remote Coding Quality Reviewer may follow a structured workflow across each coding quality review.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Review Sample Review Documentation Verify Codes Identify Findings Document Review Provide Coder Feedback Educate & Report

Coding Quality & Coder Development

Coding quality review directly affects coding accuracy, coder development, and revenue cycle integrity. Quality review findings must be documented accurately, consistently, and constructively, following quality review methodology and coding guidelines. Coder feedback should be supportive and educational, not punitive. Any compliance concern should be escalated to coding leadership or compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Current medical coding certification (CPC, CCS, CCA, CRC, or equivalent) and/or coding quality or audit certification (CPMA, CCS, CEMA, or equivalent) in good standing.
  • Previous experience in medical coding, coding quality review, coding audit, or coding education.
  • Strong ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding skills.
  • Strong coding quality methodology, coder feedback, and coding education skills.
  • Comfortable with coding software, quality review platforms, and EHR systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality review accuracy, and coding knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain quality review productivity standards and quality benchmarks.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential quality review work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging in, checking your quality review queue, and prioritizing reviews based on quality review cycle, coder, or coding program criteria.

You'll work through assigned quality review samples — reviewing clinical documentation, verifying codes, and identifying coding errors, coding discrepancies, and areas for coder improvement.

Between reviews, you'll document findings in the quality review platform, prepare coder feedback, and follow up on recurring findings with coding leadership.

You'll participate in coder education sessions, track quality review outcomes, and stay current on coding guidelines and quality review methodology updates.

The role combines coding accuracy review, coding quality metrics, coder feedback, coder education, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike production coding, which focuses on coding assigned charts, coding quality review focuses on independent quality assessment and coder development — you're the professional who ensures coding quality and supports coder improvement.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote coding quality review delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Coding quality software
Encoder software
