Remote Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist

Review clinical documentation, query providers, and support documentation accuracy, DRG/severity accuracy, and clinical documentation integrity from home.

$28–$48 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects CDI professionals with opportunities across remote clinical documentation improvement, provider documentation review, and clinical documentation integrity programs.

We are seeking qualified Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialists for remote opportunities supporting health systems, hospitals, physician practices, and CDI companies.

A Remote Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist reviews clinical documentation, queries providers, and supports documentation accuracy, DRG/severity accuracy, and clinical documentation integrity. Working alongside coders, CDI teams, and clinical leadership, the CDI specialist ensures that clinical documentation accurately reflects the patient's severity of illness, risk of mortality, and care provided.

This position is well-suited to a CDI specialist, clinical documentation professional, or experienced clinician who wants to work from home — providing documentation improvement work with schedule flexibility and without the demands of an on-site CDI department.

The specific CDI program, service line focus, CDI software, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote CDI specialist jobs, work-from-home CDI jobs, remote clinical documentation specialist, remote CDI RN, or remote clinical documentation improvement jobs roles.

Flexible CDI Work with Predictable Hours

Remote CDI runs on flexible, review-based workflows — CDI specialists work through assigned records, often with flexible daily start and end times as long as productivity and quality expectations are met. Many CDI teams offer flexible 8-hour days, and some CDI specialists work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no clinical emergencies, no overnight shifts, and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist, you may support healthcare organizations across the full CDI lifecycle.

  • Review clinical documentation for assigned patient records — physician notes, consult notes, discharge summaries, and diagnostics.
  • Identify documentation gaps where clinical conditions, severity, or procedures are not clearly documented.
  • Send provider queries to clarify documentation when clinical conditions, severity, or linkage are unclear.
  • Apply documentation improvement best practices to support accurate DRG assignment, severity of illness, and risk of mortality capture.
  • Support CC/MCC capture where clinically supported and documented.
  • Educate providers on documentation improvement through one-on-one education, small-group sessions, or written communication.
  • Collaborate with coders, CDI team members, and clinical leadership on documentation integrity.
  • Review medical necessity for admissions and continued stays (as applicable).
  • Document CDI reviews, queries, and outcomes accurately in the CDI software.
  • Track query response rates, documentation improvement trends, and DRG impact.
  • Participate in CDI team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ICD-10 coding guidelines, DRG methodology, and documentation standards.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all CDI activities.

CDI Focus

Clinical documentation improvement (CDI) is the process of improving clinical documentation so that it accurately reflects the patient's severity of illness, risk of mortality, and care provided. CDI specialists are essential to documentation integrity, coding accuracy, quality reporting, and appropriate reimbursement.

Depending on the program, CDI may focus on:

Documentation review
Provider queries
DRG accuracy
Severity of illness
Risk of mortality
Medical necessity review

The CDI specialist's role is to review clinical documentation, identify documentation gaps, query providers, and support documentation improvement — working within CDI best practices, coding guidelines, and CDI program policies. Clinical decisions, treatment decisions, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating providers; the CDI specialist supports documentation accuracy and provider education.

This structure keeps the role focused on documentation review, provider queries, documentation improvement, documentation integrity, and appropriate provider education.

Provider Queries & Documentation Improvement

CDI success depends on effective provider queries and documentation improvement — asking the right questions, in the right way, to help providers document the clinical picture accurately.

You may support provider queries and documentation improvement by:

  • Identifying documentation gaps — clinical conditions, severity, linkage, or procedures not clearly documented.
  • Drafting clear, clinically appropriate provider queries.
  • Following up on provider query responses and documenting outcomes.
  • Applying query best practices — avoiding leading queries, using compliant query formats.
  • Educating providers on documentation improvement through one-on-one education and small-group sessions.
  • Coordinating with coders on documentation issues that affect code assignment.
  • Tracking query response rates, documentation improvement trends, and DRG impact.
  • Supporting documentation integrity through ongoing review and feedback.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of coding guidelines and documentation standards.

Clinical knowledge, documentation expertise, and provider communication are essential — CDI specialists are the professionals who help ensure documentation accurately reflects the clinical picture.

CDI Workflow

A Remote Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist may follow a structured workflow across each CDI review.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Record Identify Documentation Gaps Draft Provider Query Follow Up on Response Coordinate with Coders Document & Track Educate & Report

Documentation Integrity & Compliance

CDI directly affects reimbursement, compliance, and quality reporting. Documentation improvement must be based on clinically supported and documented information, following compliant query practices and CDI program policies. Any documentation or compliance concern should be escalated to CDI leadership or compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN, LPN/LVN, RHIA, RHIT, or relevant clinical/HIM credential in good standing, and/or CDIP, CCDS, or CDS certification.
  • Previous experience in clinical documentation improvement, clinical documentation review, utilization review, or coding.
  • Strong clinical knowledge, documentation review, and provider query skills.
  • Comfortable with CDI software, EHR systems, and clinical documentation workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and compliance awareness.
  • Ability to maintain productivity standards and quality benchmarks.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential CDI work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging in, checking your CDI review queue, and prioritizing records based on admission date, service line, or CDI program criteria.

You'll work through assigned records one by one — reviewing clinical documentation, identifying documentation gaps, and sending provider queries where clarification is needed.

Between reviews, you'll follow up on provider query responses, coordinate with coders on documentation issues, and document each review accurately in the CDI software.

Throughout the day, you'll maintain productivity standards, document query outcomes, and stay current on coding guidelines and documentation standards.

The role combines documentation review, provider queries, documentation improvement, documentation integrity, and appropriate provider education.

Unlike medical coding, which assigns codes based on documentation, CDI focuses on improving documentation itself — you're the professional who helps ensure documentation accurately reflects the clinical picture.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote CDI delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

CDI software
