$20–$34 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects HIM professionals with opportunities across remote health information management, medical records, and release of information.

We are seeking qualified HIM Specialists for remote opportunities supporting hospitals, health systems, physician practices, HIM vendors, and healthcare revenue cycle organizations.

A Remote HIM Specialist supports healthcare organizations — medical record management, release of information, chart integrity, and health information operations. Working alongside coding teams, HIM leadership, and clinical staff, the HIM specialist helps ensure that medical records are complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties.

This position is well-suited to an HIM professional, medical records specialist, or healthcare administrative professional with HIM, ROI, or medical records experience who wants to work from home.

The specific HIM program, service line focus, HIM software, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote HIM specialist jobs, work-from-home HIM jobs, remote medical records specialist, remote release of information specialist, or remote health information management jobs roles.

Flexible HIM Work with Predictable Hours

Remote HIM runs on structured medical record and ROI workflows — typically during weekday business hours, with some programs offering extended coverage. There are no clinical emergencies, no overnight shifts, and no physical demands. Many teams offer flexible 8-hour days and some HIM specialists work 4-day compressed weeks. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote HIM Specialist, you may support healthcare organizations across the full HIM lifecycle.

  • Manage medical records — organizing, indexing, and maintaining electronic health records.
  • Support chart integrity — reviewing records for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Track chart deficiencies and route physician documentation completion requests.
  • Process release of information (ROI) requests — verifying authorization, reviewing records, and delivering to authorized parties.
  • Ensure ROI requests comply with HIPAA and state law.
  • Support medical record requests from attorneys, insurance companies, and patients.
  • Document all HIM activities accurately in the HIM software or EHR.
  • Support chart completion and physician suspension processes (as applicable).
  • Coordinate with coding teams on documentation needed for coding.
  • Support record reconciliation and duplicate record management.
  • Support HIM quality audits and data integrity reviews.
  • Support provider inquiries and HIM customer service.
  • Participate in HIM team meetings and quality improvement activities.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all HIM activities.

HIM Focus

Health information management is the practice of managing healthcare data and medical records — ensuring that records are complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties. HIM specialists are essential to medical record integrity, patient privacy, and healthcare data operations.

Depending on the program, HIM may focus on:

Medical record management
Release of information (ROI)
Chart integrity
Chart completion / deficiency tracking
Privacy and security
Data integrity and reconciliation

The HIM specialist's role is to manage medical records, process ROI requests, support chart integrity, and document all activities within HIM standards and HIPAA regulations — organizing records, reviewing for completeness, processing authorizations, and coordinating with teams. Clinical decisions, treatment decisions, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating providers; the HIM specialist supports health information management operations.

This structure keeps the role focused on medical record management, ROI processing, chart integrity, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Release of Information & Chart Integrity

HIM success depends on strong ROI processing and chart integrity — protecting patient privacy while ensuring records are complete, accurate, and accessible to authorized parties.

You may support ROI and chart integrity by:

  • Reviewing ROI requests for proper authorization and legal compliance.
  • Verifying patient identity and authorization validity.
  • Determining what records are being requested and applying appropriate disclosure rules.
  • Processing requests within HIPAA and state law requirements.
  • Coordinating with attorneys, insurance companies, and other authorized requestors.
  • Documenting all disclosures in accordance with HIPAA accounting requirements.
  • Reviewing charts for completeness and accuracy.
  • Identifying chart deficiencies and routing physician completion requests.
  • Supporting chart completion and physician suspension processes.
  • Supporting record reconciliation and duplicate record management.

Attention to detail, HIPAA knowledge, and ROI expertise are essential — HIM specialists are the professionals who ensure medical records are complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties.

HIM Workflow

A Remote HIM Specialist may follow a structured workflow across each HIM activity.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Request Verify Authorization Review Record Process Request Document Disclosure Deliver / Route Follow Up & Close

HIPAA & Patient Privacy

HIM directly affects patient privacy, HIPAA compliance, and regulatory standing. ROI requests must be processed in accordance with HIPAA and applicable state law, and all disclosures must be documented accurately. Any privacy or compliance concern should be escalated to HIM leadership or compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in health information management, medical records, release of information, or healthcare administrative support.
  • RHIT, RHIA, or relevant HIM credential preferred but not required by all employers.
  • Strong HIM knowledge, medical record management, and documentation skills.
  • Comfortable with EHR systems, HIM software, and healthcare documentation workflows.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, ROI regulations, and medical record standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and privacy awareness.
  • Ability to maintain productivity standards and quality benchmarks.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential HIM work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging in, checking your HIM queue, and prioritizing tasks based on deadlines, request type, or HIM program criteria.

You'll process ROI requests — verifying authorizations, reviewing records, and delivering them in accordance with HIPAA and state law. You'll document each disclosure accurately for accounting purposes.

You'll review charts for completeness and accuracy, identify chart deficiencies, and route physician completion requests. You'll support record reconciliation and duplicate record management.

You'll coordinate with coding teams on documentation needed for coding, support provider inquiries, and document all HIM activities accurately.

The role combines medical record management, ROI processing, chart integrity, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike coding roles, which assign codes based on documentation, HIM focuses on managing the medical record itself — you're the professional who ensures records are complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties.
