Remote Coding Auditor

Perform coding audits, review coding accuracy and compliance, and support coder education — ensuring coding integrity, coding compliance, and coding quality from home.

$30–$52 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects certified coding auditors with opportunities across remote coding audit, coding compliance review, and coding quality programs.

We are seeking qualified Coding Auditors for remote opportunities supporting health systems, physician practices, coding companies, billing companies, and healthcare compliance organizations.

A Remote Coding Auditor performs coding audits, reviews coding accuracy and compliance, and supports coder education — ensuring coding integrity, coding compliance, and coding quality. Working alongside coding teams, CDI teams, compliance leadership, and revenue cycle leadership, the coding auditor provides independent, objective reviews of coding accuracy, coding compliance, and documentation support.

This position is well-suited to a certified coding auditor or experienced medical coder who wants to work from home — providing audit and compliance work with schedule flexibility and without the demands of an on-site audit department.

The specific audit program, service line focus, audit software, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote coding auditor jobs, work-from-home coding auditor, remote coding compliance auditor, remote CPMA auditor, or remote coding quality reviewer roles.

Flexible Audit Work with Predictable Hours

Remote coding audit runs on flexible, project-based workflows — coding auditors work through assigned audit samples, often with flexible daily start and end times as long as audit deadlines and quality expectations are met. Many audit teams offer flexible 8-hour days, and some coding auditors work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no clinical emergencies, no overnight shifts, and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Coding Auditor, you may support healthcare organizations across the full coding audit lifecycle.

  • Perform coding audits on assigned samples of coded records — inpatient, outpatient, physician, or specialty-specific.
  • Review clinical documentation and coding to verify coding accuracy and coding compliance.
  • Identify coding errors, overcoding, undercoding, and documentation gaps.
  • Evaluate coding against ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M coding guidelines.
  • Evaluate CPT modifier usage and E/M coding accuracy.
  • Assess medical necessity support and coding alignment with documentation.
  • Document audit findings in the audit software accurately and consistently.
  • Provide coding feedback to coders through written feedback and one-on-one education.
  • Support coder education through feedback sessions, coding guidance, and documentation of recurring issues.
  • Participate in coder training and coding education activities.
  • Track audit findings, error trends, and coding accuracy rates.
  • Coordinate with CDI, compliance, and coding leadership on audit findings.
  • Support external audits, payer audits, and compliance reviews as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, payer rules, and regulatory updates.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all audit activities.

Coding Audit Focus

Coding audit is the process of independently reviewing coded records to verify coding accuracy, coding compliance, and documentation support. Coding auditors are essential to coding integrity, compliance, revenue cycle accuracy, and coder education.

Depending on the program, coding audit may focus on:

Coding accuracy audit
Coding compliance audit
E/M audit
Surgery coding audit
Inpatient coding audit
Outpatient coding audit

The coding auditor's role is to independently review coding accuracy, coding compliance, and documentation support within audit methodology and coding guidelines — documenting findings, providing coder feedback, and supporting coder education. Clinical decisions, treatment decisions, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating providers; the coding auditor verifies that coded records accurately reflect documented clinical information.

This structure keeps the role focused on coding accuracy review, coding compliance, coder feedback, coder education, and appropriate escalation.

Coder Education & Coding Quality

Coding audit success depends on coder education and coding quality improvement — using audit findings to improve coding accuracy across the coding team.

You may support coder education and coding quality by:

  • Documenting audit findings in audit software accurately and consistently.
  • Providing written coding feedback to individual coders.
  • Conducting one-on-one and small-group coder education sessions.
  • Identifying coding error trends and recurring coding issues.
  • Supporting coder training with real-world audit examples.
  • Coordinating with coding leadership on education priorities.
  • Tracking coding accuracy rates and audit outcomes.
  • Supporting coding quality improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinating with CDI, compliance, and coding leadership on recurring findings.

Audit methodology, coding knowledge, and coder communication are essential — coding auditors are the professionals who ensure coding integrity and support coder education.

Coding Audit Workflow

A Remote Coding Auditor may follow a structured workflow across each coding audit.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Audit Sample Review Documentation Verify Codes Identify Findings Document Audit Provide Coder Feedback Educate & Report

Coding Compliance & Audit Integrity

Coding audit directly affects coding compliance, revenue cycle integrity, and regulatory standing. Audit findings must be documented accurately, consistently, and objectively, following audit methodology and coding guidelines. Any compliance concern should be escalated to coding leadership or compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Current medical coding certification (CPC, CCS, CCA, CRC, or equivalent) and/or coding audit certification (CPMA, CCS, CEMA, or equivalent) in good standing.
  • Previous experience in medical coding, coding audit, coding compliance, or revenue cycle integrity.
  • Strong ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding skills.
  • Strong audit methodology, coding compliance, and coder education skills.
  • Comfortable with coding software, audit platforms, and EHR systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, audit accuracy, and compliance awareness.
  • Ability to maintain audit productivity standards and quality benchmarks.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential audit work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by logging in, checking your audit queue, and prioritizing audits based on audit cycle, service line, or compliance priorities.

You'll work through assigned audit samples — reviewing clinical documentation, verifying codes, and identifying coding errors, overcoding, undercoding, or documentation gaps.

Between audits, you'll document findings in the audit software, prepare coder feedback, and follow up on recurring findings with coding leadership.

You'll participate in coder education sessions, track audit outcomes, and stay current on coding guidelines and compliance updates.

The role combines coding accuracy review, coding compliance, coder feedback, coder education, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike production coding, which focuses on coding assigned charts, coding audit focuses on independent review of coding accuracy — you're the professional who ensures coding integrity and supports coder improvement.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote coding audit delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Audit software
Encoder software
EHR / EMR
