Remote Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)

Provide hospital outpatient facility coding, APC assignment, and outpatient procedural coding — from home.

$26–$44 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects Certified Outpatient Coders with opportunities across hospital outpatient facility coding, APC assignment, and remote outpatient procedural coding.

We are seeking qualified Certified Outpatient Coders (COC) for remote opportunities supporting hospitals, health systems, ambulatory surgery centers, and revenue cycle organizations.

A Remote Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) codes hospital outpatient facility services, assigns CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes, and assigns APC for outpatient facility reimbursement. Working within their COC certification and coding compliance scope, the outpatient facility coder reviews outpatient hospital records, accurately codes outpatient procedures and diagnoses, and assigns APC for accurate outpatient facility billing.

This position is well-suited to an experienced outpatient coder with outpatient facility coding knowledge, APC assignment experience, and COC certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful outpatient facility coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific specialty, coding focus, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote COC coder jobs, work-from-home outpatient coder jobs, remote hospital outpatient coder jobs, virtual COC coder, or telehealth outpatient facility coding specialist roles.

Structured Virtual COC Coding with Predictable Hours

Virtual COC coding runs on scheduled coding queues and coding production workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend hours. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), you may support outpatient facility coding across a range of virtual coding encounters.

  • Review hospital outpatient records for outpatient facility coding — hospital outpatient records, operative reports, and clinical documentation.
  • Assign CPT codes — accurately coding outpatient procedures and services.
  • Assign HCPCS codes — accurately coding supplies, drugs, and DME items.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — accurately coding outpatient diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Assign APC — assigning Ambulatory Payment Classifications for outpatient facility reimbursement.
  • Apply modifiers — applying appropriate modifiers for outpatient facility billing.
  • Support coding quality — supporting outpatient coding quality and coding accuracy.
  • Support coding compliance — maintaining coding compliance with CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, APC, and CMS requirements.
  • Support coding audits — supporting internal and external outpatient coding audits.
  • Support CDI collaboration — coordinating with CDI specialists on outpatient documentation clarification.
  • Support coding production — maintaining productivity and accuracy standards.
  • Document coding work accurately in the coding system and coding documentation.
  • Coordinate with coding teams, CDI teams, and revenue cycle teams as needed.
  • Support denial management — supporting coding-related denial management and appeals.
  • Participate in coding quality improvement and revenue cycle quality improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, APC, coding guidelines, and CMS outpatient requirements.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual outpatient coding work.

Virtual Certified Outpatient Coder Focus

Virtual outpatient facility coding is a growing area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for outpatient coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that outpatient coders improve coding accuracy and hospital revenue through accurate CPT coding and APC assignment. Virtual outpatient coders extend coding reach, support hospitals and health systems, and improve outpatient coding quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual outpatient coding may focus on:

Outpatient facility coding
Outpatient procedural coding
APC assignment
Ambulatory surgery coding
Emergency department coding
Observation coding

The outpatient coder's role is to provide outpatient facility coding within their COC certification and coding compliance scope — including hospital outpatient record review, CPT and HCPCS coding, ICD-10-CM coding, APC assignment, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and provider documentation; the outpatient coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, CDI, and revenue cycle teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on outpatient facility coding, outpatient procedural coding, APC assignment, documentation, and coding compliance.

Outpatient Procedural Coding & APC Assignment

Effective virtual outpatient coding depends on strong outpatient facility coding skills and APC assignment expertise — the coder's coding expertise and clinical documentation knowledge determine how to help hospitals achieve accurate outpatient coding.

Depending on the program and specialty focus, you may support outpatient coding by:

  • Reviewing hospital outpatient records for outpatient facility coding.
  • Assigning CPT codes — outpatient procedures and services.
  • Assigning HCPCS codes — supplies, drugs, and DME items.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — outpatient diagnoses.
  • Assigning APC — Ambulatory Payment Classifications.
  • Applying modifiers — appropriate modifiers for outpatient facility billing.
  • Supporting coding quality — outpatient coding quality and accuracy.
  • Supporting coding compliance — CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, APC, and CMS requirements.
  • Supporting coding audits — internal and external outpatient coding audits.
  • Supporting CDI — outpatient documentation clarification.
  • Documenting coding work accurately and consistently.
  • Supporting denial management — coding-related denial management and appeals.

Coding expertise, clinical documentation knowledge, and clear communication are essential — outpatient coders are the coding professionals who help hospitals achieve accurate outpatient facility coding and APC assignment.

Virtual Certified Outpatient Coder Workflow

A Remote Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) may follow a structured workflow across each virtual outpatient coding encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Coding Assignment Review Outpatient Record Assign CPT/HCPCS Codes Assign ICD-10-CM Codes Assign APC Apply Modifiers Document & Escalate If Needed

Coding Compliance & HIPAA Compliance

Outpatient facility coding directly affects hospital outpatient reimbursement, coding compliance, and revenue cycle performance. All coding must comply with CPT coding guidelines, HCPCS requirements, ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, APC assignment rules, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting outpatient facility reimbursement must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. Outpatient coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual outpatient coding work.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), outpatient facility coder, or hospital outpatient coder.
  • COC certification (Certified Outpatient Coder, AHIMA) required.
  • Strong outpatient facility coding knowledge, APC assignment skills, and outpatient procedural coding experience.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing coding queues and coding assignments — checking outpatient coding priorities and coding production tasks.

You'll review hospital outpatient records — reviewing hospital outpatient records, operative reports, and clinical documentation to identify procedures and diagnoses supported by documentation.

You'll assign CPT and HCPCS codes for outpatient procedures and services, assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes for outpatient encounters, and assign APC — accurately coding outpatient facility services for hospital billing.

Between coding activities, you'll support coding quality, coding compliance, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, CDI teams, and revenue cycle teams, and support coding compliance with CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, APC, and CMS requirements.

The role combines outpatient facility coding, outpatient procedural coding, APC assignment, coding compliance, documentation, and CDI collaboration.

Unlike complex inpatient coder work, which focuses on inpatient hospital services and DRG assignment, outpatient facility coder work focuses specifically on hospital outpatient services and APC assignment — you're the COC who helps hospitals achieve accurate outpatient facility coding.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote outpatient facility coding delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Coding systems
CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM resources
APC grouper software
