Provide complex inpatient coding, ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, and MS-DRG/APR-DRG assignment — from home.
Virelia Health connects Certified Inpatient Coders with opportunities across complex inpatient coding, ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, and remote hospital inpatient coding.
We are seeking qualified Certified Inpatient Coders (CIC) for remote opportunities supporting hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers, and revenue cycle organizations.
A Remote Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) codes complex inpatient hospital records, assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, and assigns MS-DRG and APR-DRG for complex inpatient reimbursement. Working within their CIC certification and coding compliance scope, the CIC coder reviews complex inpatient records, accurately codes diagnoses and procedures including CC/MCC capture, and assigns accurate DRG for complex inpatient hospital billing.
This position is well-suited to an experienced inpatient coder with complex inpatient coding knowledge, CC/MCC capture experience, and CIC certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful complex inpatient coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.
The specific specialty, coding focus, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.
This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote CIC coder jobs, work-from-home CIC coder jobs, remote complex inpatient coder jobs, virtual CIC coder, or telehealth inpatient coding specialist roles.
Virtual CIC coding runs on scheduled coding queues and coding production workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend hours. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.
As a Remote Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), you may support complex inpatient coding across a range of virtual coding encounters.
Virtual CIC coding is a growing area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for complex inpatient coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that CIC coders improve coding accuracy and hospital revenue through accurate ICD-10-PCS coding, CC/MCC capture, and complex DRG assignment. Virtual CIC coders extend complex coding reach, support hospitals and health systems, and improve complex coding quality across organizations.
Depending on the program, virtual CIC coding may focus on:
The CIC coder's role is to provide complex inpatient coding within their CIC certification and coding compliance scope — including complex hospital record review, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding including CC/MCC capture, DRG assignment, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and provider documentation; the CIC coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, CDI, and revenue cycle teams.
This structure keeps the role focused on complex inpatient coding, ICD-10-PCS coding, CC/MCC capture, complex DRG assignment, documentation, and coding compliance.
Effective virtual CIC coding depends on strong complex inpatient coding skills and DRG assignment expertise — the coder's coding expertise and clinical documentation knowledge determine how to help hospitals achieve accurate complex inpatient coding.
Depending on the program and specialty focus, you may support complex inpatient coding by:
Coding expertise, clinical documentation knowledge, and clear communication are essential — CIC coders are the coding professionals who help hospitals achieve accurate complex inpatient coding and DRG assignment.
A Remote Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) may follow a structured workflow across each virtual complex inpatient coding encounter.
Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:
Complex inpatient coding directly affects hospital reimbursement, coding compliance, and revenue cycle performance. All coding must comply with ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines, complex DRG assignment rules, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting complex case reimbursement must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. CIC coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual CIC coding work.
Experience or certification in any of the following may be beneficial:
A typical day may begin by reviewing coding queues and complex case assignments — checking complex inpatient coding priorities and complex case coding tasks.
You'll review complex inpatient hospital records — reviewing hospital records, operative reports, and complex clinical documentation to identify diagnoses (including CCs and MCCs) and procedures supported by documentation.
You'll assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes including CCs and MCCs, and assign ICD-10-PCS procedure codes for complex inpatient hospital services, and assign MS-DRG and APR-DRG — accurately coding complex inpatient services for hospital billing.
Between coding activities, you'll support coding quality, coding compliance, complex DRG validation, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.
Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, CDI teams, and revenue cycle teams, and support coding compliance with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG, and CMS requirements.
The role combines complex inpatient coding, ICD-10-PCS coding, CC/MCC capture, complex DRG assignment, documentation, and CDI collaboration.
Unlike CCS coder work, which uses the AHIMA CCS credential for broad inpatient/facility coding, CIC coder work uses the AHIMA CIC credential for complex inpatient cases with deeper CC/MCC capture and higher DRG complexity — you're the CIC who helps hospitals achieve accurate complex inpatient coding.
This position is designed for remote complex inpatient coding delivery.
Depending on the employer, you may work with:
Candidates should have a stable internet connection suitable for coding system remote access, a private workspace suitable for confidential coding work, and comfort with multiple coding and revenue cycle systems.

Top-demand states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Colorado.
Strong secondary markets: Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.
CIC coders must maintain current CIC certification (Certified Inpatient Coder, AHIMA) or equivalent. Additional CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certifications are preferred. Some employers require additional certifications; others accept CIC with relevant complex inpatient coding experience. Requirements vary by employer. Always confirm the specific certification requirements with the employer before applying.
