Remote ED Coder

Provide emergency department coding, ED E/M leveling, and ED reimbursement support — from home.

$26–$46 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects emergency department coders with opportunities across ED facility coding, ED professional coding, and remote emergency department reimbursement.

We are seeking qualified ED Coders for remote opportunities supporting hospital coding departments, physician groups, emergency medicine practices, coding vendors, and healthcare organizations.

A Remote ED Coder codes emergency department encounters, assigns ED E/M levels, and supports emergency department coding accuracy. Working within their coding certification and coding compliance scope, the ED coder reviews emergency department records, assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes, determines ED E/M levels using facility or professional ED leveling criteria, and supports accurate emergency department reimbursement.

This position is well-suited to an experienced ED coder with ED E/M leveling knowledge, emergency department coding experience, and coding certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful emergency department coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific ED coding focus (facility vs professional), ED leveling methodology, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote ED coder jobs, work-from-home emergency department coder jobs, remote ED facility coder jobs, virtual ED coder, or telehealth ED coding specialist roles.

Structured Virtual ED Coding with Predictable Hours

Virtual ED coding runs on scheduled coding production workflows and chart review cycles, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend coverage to handle ED volume. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

As a Remote ED Coder, you may support emergency department coding across a range of virtual coding encounters.

  • Review emergency department records — reviewing ED provider documentation, nursing notes, and clinical data.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — accurately coding ED diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Assign CPT procedure codes — coding ED procedures, wound repairs, and ancillary services.
  • Determine ED E/M levels — assigning ED E/M levels using facility or professional ED leveling criteria.

  • Support coding quality — supporting coding quality and coding accuracy.
  • Support coding compliance — maintaining coding compliance with CMS and payer requirements.
  • Support coding audits — supporting internal and external coding audits.
  • Coordinate with coding teams, CDI teams, and ED clinical teams as needed.
  • Participate in coding quality improvement and ED coding quality improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ED coding guidelines, ED E/M leveling, and coding requirements.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual ED coding work.

Virtual ED Coder Focus

Virtual ED coding is a specialized area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for ED coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that ED coders improve emergency department coding accuracy and reimbursement through specialized ED coding expertise. Virtual ED coders extend coding reach, support hospital coding departments and physician groups, and improve emergency department coding quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual ED coding may focus on:

ED facility coding
ED professional coding
ED E/M leveling
Critical care coding
Observation coding
ED procedure coding

The ED coder's role is to provide emergency department coding within their coding certification and coding compliance scope — including ED record review, ICD-10-CM coding, CPT coding, ED E/M leveling, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and provider documentation; the ED coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, CDI, and ED clinical teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on ED E/M leveling, ED facility coding, ED professional coding, documentation, and coding compliance.

ED E/M Leveling & Emergency Department Coding

Effective virtual ED coding depends on strong ED E/M leveling skills and emergency medicine coding knowledge — the coder's coding expertise and clinical insight determine how to help hospitals and physician groups achieve accurate emergency department coding and reimbursement.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support ED coding by:

  • Reviewing emergency department records — ED provider documentation and clinical data.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — accurately coding ED diagnoses.
  • Assigning CPT procedure codes — coding ED procedures and ancillary services.
  • Determining ED E/M levels — using facility or professional ED leveling criteria.
  • Applying facility ED leveling — facility ED leveling methodology.
  • Applying professional ED leveling — MDM or time-based E/M leveling.
  • Supporting ED facility coding — coding ED facility services.
  • Supporting ED professional coding — coding ED physician services.
  • Supporting critical care coding — coding critical care services.
  • Supporting observation coding — coding ED observation services.
  • Documenting coding work accurately and consistently.
  • Supporting coding quality improvement and ED coding quality improvement.

Coding expertise, emergency medicine coding knowledge, and clear communication are essential — ED coders are the coding professionals who help hospitals and physician groups achieve accurate emergency department coding and reimbursement.

Virtual ED Coder Workflow

A Remote ED Coder may follow a structured workflow across each virtual ED coding encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive ED Coding Assignment Review ED Record Assign ICD-10-CM Codes Assign CPT Codes Determine ED E/M Level Apply Modifiers Document Coding Escalate If Needed

Coding Compliance & HIPAA Compliance

ED coding directly affects emergency department reimbursement, coding compliance, and hospital revenue. All coding must comply with ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, CPT coding guidelines, CMS emergency department coding rules, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting reimbursement must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. ED coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual ED coding work.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an ED coder, emergency department coder, or medical coder supporting emergency department services.
  • CPC, CCS, CEDC, or equivalent coding certification required.
  • Strong ED E/M leveling knowledge, ED facility coding knowledge, and emergency department coding experience.
  • Comfortable with CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and ED coding workflows.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential coding work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing ED coding assignments and coding queues — checking ED coding priorities and chart review tasks.

You'll review emergency department records — reviewing ED provider documentation, nursing notes, and clinical data to identify diagnoses, procedures, and ED E/M level criteria.

You'll assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT procedure codes, and determine ED E/M levels — using facility or professional ED leveling criteria to accurately code emergency department encounters.

Between coding activities, you'll support coding quality, coding compliance, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, CDI teams, and ED clinical teams, and support coding compliance with CMS and payer requirements.

The role combines ED E/M leveling, ED facility coding, ED professional coding, documentation, and coding compliance.

Unlike general E/M coder work, which focuses on broad outpatient E/M coding, ED coder work focuses specifically on emergency department encounters — you're the ED coder who helps hospitals and physician groups achieve accurate emergency department coding and reimbursement.
