Remote Surgical Coder

Provide surgical procedure coding, operative report coding, and surgical specialty coding — from home.

$28–$48 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects surgical coders with opportunities across surgical procedure coding, operative report coding, and remote surgical reimbursement.

We are seeking qualified Surgical Coders for remote opportunities supporting surgical practices, ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals, health systems, and surgical specialty organizations.

A Remote Surgical Coder codes surgical procedures across specialties for accurate surgical reimbursement. Working within their coding certification and coding compliance scope, the surgical coder reviews operative reports, assigns CPT surgical procedure codes, supports ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, applies surgical modifiers, and supports accurate surgical-side reimbursement across surgical specialties.

This position is well-suited to an experienced surgical coder with surgical procedure coding knowledge, operative report review experience, and coding certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful surgical coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific surgical specialty focus, procedure mix, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote surgical coder jobs, work-from-home surgical coder jobs, remote operative report coder jobs, virtual surgical coder, or telehealth surgical coding specialist roles.

Structured Virtual Surgical Coding with Predictable Hours

Virtual surgical coding runs on scheduled coding queues and coding production workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend hours. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Surgical Coder, you may support surgical coding across a range of virtual coding encounters.

  • Review operative reports for surgical coding — reviewing surgical documentation, procedure notes, and clinical data.
  • Assign CPT surgical procedure codes — accurately coding surgical procedures supported by documentation.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — accurately coding diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Assign ICD-10-PCS procedure codes — accurately coding facility procedures as applicable.

  • Coordinate with coding teams, surgical teams, and revenue cycle teams as needed.
  • Support denial management — supporting coding-related surgical denial management and appeals.
  • Participate in coding quality improvement and surgical revenue cycle quality improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of CPT surgical coding, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, modifiers, surgical coding guidelines, and CMS requirements.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual surgical coding work.

Virtual Surgical Coder Focus

Virtual surgical coding is a growing area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for surgical coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that surgical coders improve coding accuracy and surgical revenue through accurate operative report coding across surgical specialties. Virtual surgical coders extend coding reach, support surgical practices and facilities, and improve surgical coding quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual surgical coding may focus on:

General surgery coding
Orthopedic surgery coding
Cardiovascular surgery coding
Neurosurgery coding
Ophthalmic surgery coding
Surgical coding compliance

The surgical coder's role is to provide surgical procedure coding within their coding certification and coding compliance scope — including operative report review, CPT surgical procedure coding, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, ICD-10-PCS procedure coding, surgical modifier application, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and surgeon documentation; the surgical coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, surgical, and revenue cycle teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on surgical procedure coding, operative report coding, surgical modifier application, documentation, and coding compliance.

Operative Report Coding & Surgical Specialty Support

Effective virtual surgical coding depends on strong operative report coding skills and surgical specialty knowledge — the coder's coding expertise and surgical documentation knowledge determine how to help surgical practices achieve accurate surgical-side coding.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support surgical coding by:

  • Reviewing operative reports for surgical coding.
  • Assigning CPT surgical procedure codes — procedures supported by documentation.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Assigning ICD-10-PCS procedure codes — facility procedures as applicable.
  • Applying surgical modifiers — appropriate modifiers for surgical-side billing.
  • Applying global surgery rules — global surgical package rules.
  • Supporting surgical specialty coding — general, orthopedic, cardiovascular, neurosurgery, ophthalmic, and other specialties.
  • Supporting surgical coding quality — surgical coding quality and accuracy.
  • Supporting coding compliance — CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CMS requirements.
  • Supporting coding audits — internal and external surgical coding audits.
  • Supporting provider education — surgeon documentation education.
  • Documenting coding work accurately and consistently.
  • Supporting denial management — coding-related surgical denial management and appeals.

Coding expertise, surgical documentation knowledge, and clear communication are essential — surgical coders are the coding professionals who help surgical practices achieve accurate surgical-side coding across surgical specialties.

Virtual Surgical Coder Workflow

A Remote Surgical Coder may follow a structured workflow across each virtual surgical coding encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Coding Assignment Review Operative Report Assign CPT Surgical Codes Assign ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Codes Apply Modifiers Document Coding Escalate If Needed

Coding Compliance & HIPAA Compliance

Surgical coding directly affects surgical reimbursement, coding compliance, and surgical revenue cycle performance. All coding must comply with CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, surgical coding guidelines, and CMS requirements, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting surgical reimbursement must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. Surgical coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual surgical coding work.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a surgical coder, operative report coder, or surgical specialty coder.
  • Strong surgical procedure coding knowledge, operative report review skills, and surgical specialty coding experience.
  • Comfortable with CPT surgical coding, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, modifiers, and surgical coding workflows.
  • Coding certification (CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential coding work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing coding queues and coding assignments — checking surgical coding priorities and coding production tasks across surgical specialties.

You'll review operative reports — reviewing surgical documentation, procedure notes, and clinical data to identify surgical procedures and diagnoses supported by documentation.

You'll assign CPT surgical procedure codes, ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, ICD-10-PCS procedure codes (as applicable), and apply surgical modifiers — accurately coding surgical procedures for surgical-side billing.

Between coding activities, you'll support coding quality, coding compliance, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, surgical teams, and revenue cycle teams, and support coding compliance with CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CMS requirements.

The role combines surgical procedure coding, operative report coding, surgical modifier application, coding compliance, documentation, and provider education.

Unlike professional fee coder work, which spans all E/M and physician services, surgical coder work focuses specifically on surgical procedures and operative reports — you're the surgical coder who helps surgical practices achieve accurate surgical-side coding across their specialties.
