Remote Virtual Postpartum Nurse

Provide postpartum recovery support, breastfeeding/lactation support, and postpartum mood screening — from home.

$34–$56 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects postpartum registered nurses with opportunities across virtual postpartum care, telehealth maternity support, and remote postpartum programs.

We are seeking qualified Virtual Postpartum Nurses for remote opportunities supporting virtual postpartum programs, telehealth maternity companies, health systems, health plans, and digital women's health organizations.

A Remote Virtual Postpartum Nurse provides postpartum recovery support, breastfeeding/lactation support, and postpartum mood screening. Working within their state licensure and clinical scope of practice, the virtual postpartum nurse supports new mothers through the critical postpartum period — assessing recovery from delivery, supporting breastfeeding and infant feeding, screening for postpartum mood disorders, and coordinating care with obstetric and pediatric providers.

This position is well-suited to an experienced postpartum RN with maternal-newborn nursing, postpartum care, or telehealth maternity support experience who wants to practice in a virtual setting — providing meaningful clinical postpartum support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific virtual postpartum program, patient population, clinical model, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote virtual postpartum nurse jobs, work-from-home postpartum RN jobs, remote postpartum nursing jobs, virtual postpartum nurse, or telehealth lactation nurse roles.

Structured Virtual Postpartum Care with Predictable Hours

Virtual postpartum nursing runs on scheduled postpartum check-ins and outreach blocks, giving your clinical day predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime, evening, or weekend coverage to accommodate new mothers' schedules. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour shifts, and some RNs work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Virtual Postpartum Nurse, you may support new mothers across a range of virtual postpartum encounters.

  • Conduct virtual postpartum assessments — recovery from vaginal or cesarean delivery, pain management, and healing.
  • Assess postpartum physical recovery — bleeding, perineal healing, cesarean incision healing, and pain.
  • Monitor for postpartum complications — hemorrhage, infection, preeclampsia, and blood clots.
  • Provide breastfeeding and lactation support — latch assessment, positioning, and milk supply concerns.
  • Support infant feeding — formula feeding, pumping, and combination feeding.
  • Provide postpartum mood screening — Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and postpartum depression education.
  • Provide postpartum anxiety and psychosis education — warning signs and when to seek help.
  • Support postpartum recovery — sleep, nutrition, and physical activity guidance.
  • Provide newborn care education — feeding, diapering, bathing, and safe sleep.
  • Support new mothers with emotional adjustment to parenthood.
  • Coordinate care with obstetric providers, pediatricians, and lactation consultants.
  • Document each postpartum encounter accurately in the EHR or virtual postpartum platform.
  • Escalate emergency postpartum concerns to 911, OB, or emergency services immediately.
  • Support patients with high-risk postpartum needs — preeclampsia monitoring and postpartum hemorrhage watch.
  • Participate in virtual postpartum quality improvement, clinical review, and education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of postpartum care guidelines, lactation support, and licensure requirements.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual postpartum interactions.

Virtual Postpartum Nursing Focus

Virtual postpartum nursing is a growing area of maternal care practice — driven by increased demand for postpartum support, expanded telehealth coverage for maternity care, and the recognition that postpartum nurses help new mothers recover safely and adjust to parenthood. Virtual postpartum nurses extend postpartum care reach, improve maternal outcomes, and support new mothers through the critical "fourth trimester."

Depending on the program, virtual postpartum nursing may focus on:

Postpartum recovery support
Breastfeeding/lactation support
Postpartum mood screening
Newborn care education
New parent adjustment support
Postpartum complication monitoring

The virtual postpartum nurse's role is to provide virtual postpartum nursing within their licensure and scope of practice — including postpartum assessment, lactation support, mood screening, patient education, documentation, and emergency escalation. Clinical decisions, medication changes, and diagnostic decisions belong to the treating OB or pediatric providers; the virtual postpartum nurse supports the mother's postpartum recovery and coordinates with the care team.

This structure keeps the role focused on postpartum assessment, lactation support, mood screening, patient education, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Breastfeeding Support & Postpartum Mood Screening

Effective virtual postpartum nursing depends on strong lactation support and postpartum mood screening — the RN's clinical judgment and maternal expertise determine how to help each new mother recover and thrive.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support patients by:

  • Conducting virtual postpartum assessments — recovery from vaginal or cesarean delivery.
  • Assessing postpartum physical recovery — bleeding, perineal healing, incision healing, and pain.
  • Monitoring for postpartum complications — hemorrhage, infection, preeclampsia, and blood clots.
  • Providing breastfeeding and lactation support — latch, positioning, and milk supply.
  • Supporting infant feeding — formula feeding, pumping, and combination feeding.
  • Providing postpartum mood screening — EPDS and postpartum depression education.
  • Providing postpartum anxiety and psychosis education — warning signs and when to seek help.
  • Supporting postpartum recovery — sleep, nutrition, and physical activity.
  • Providing newborn care education — feeding, diapering, bathing, and safe sleep.
  • Supporting new mothers with emotional adjustment to parenthood.
  • Coordinating care with obstetric providers, pediatricians, and lactation consultants.
  • Documenting each postpartum encounter accurately and consistently.
  • Escalating emergency postpartum concerns to 911, OB, or emergency services immediately.

Clinical judgment, maternal expertise, and clear communication are essential — virtual postpartum nurses are the RNs who help new mothers recover safely and adjust to parenthood.

Virtual Postpartum Workflow

A Remote Virtual Postpartum Nurse may follow a structured workflow across each virtual postpartum encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Patient History Assess Postpartum Recovery Assess Breastfeeding/Feeding Screen Postpartum Mood Educate & Support Coordinate Care Document & Escalate If Needed

Emergency Postpartum Escalation & Maternal Safety

If a patient presents with emergency postpartum symptoms — heavy bleeding, signs of infection, severe headache with vision changes (postpartum preeclampsia), chest pain, shortness of breath, or symptoms of postpartum psychosis — the virtual postpartum nurse must follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately, including directing the patient to call 911, contact their OB, or seek emergency care. Virtual postpartum care does not replace emergency care.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license in good standing in the state(s) required by the employer.
  • Extensive clinical experience in postpartum nursing, maternal-newborn nursing, or telehealth maternity care.
  • Strong postpartum assessment, lactation support, and postpartum mood screening skills.
  • Comfortable with telehealth platforms, postpartum protocols, and EHR systems.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring emergency or clinical escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet suitable for real-time video and a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing your postpartum patient panel — checking discharge summaries, delivery type, feeding method, and any postpartum follow-up needs.

You'll conduct virtual postpartum check-ins — assessing recovery from delivery, evaluating breastfeeding or infant feeding, screening for postpartum mood concerns, and providing education on newborn care and maternal recovery.

Between encounters, you'll document each postpartum interaction accurately, coordinate with OB providers, pediatricians, and lactation consultants, and follow up with new mothers who may need additional support.

Throughout the day, you'll identify postpartum complications and follow the employer's emergency escalation protocol immediately — directing patients to 911, their OB, or emergency care as clinically indicated.

The role combines postpartum assessment, lactation support, postpartum mood screening, patient education, documentation, and appropriate emergency escalation.

Unlike virtual L&D nursing, which focuses on labor and delivery, virtual postpartum nursing focuses on the "fourth trimester" — the critical weeks after birth when mothers need the most support.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote virtual postpartum delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Telehealth platforms
EHR / EMR
Secure messaging systems
Patient portals
Telehealth telephony

Candidates should have a stable internet connection suitable for real-time video, a private workspace suitable for confidential patient conversations, and comfort with multiple digital platforms.
