Remote Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Provide virtual psychiatric care — telehealth evaluations, medication management, and psychiatric treatment through secure digital platforms from home.

$60–$110 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects healthcare professionals with opportunities across virtual psychiatry, digital psychiatric care, and telehealth behavioral health.

We are seeking qualified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) for remote opportunities supporting telehealth psychiatry companies, digital behavioral health platforms, and health systems running virtual psychiatric programs.

A Remote Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides virtual psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychiatric treatment to patients through secure telehealth platforms. Working within their state licensure and clinical scope of practice, the PMHNP conducts psychiatric assessments, develops treatment plans, prescribes and manages psychiatric medications, and provides ongoing psychiatric care to patients with mental health conditions.

This position is well-suited to a board-certified PMHNP who wants to practice in a virtual setting — providing meaningful psychiatric care with schedule flexibility and without the demands of an on-site clinic or facility.

The specific telepsychiatry program, patient population, therapeutic focus, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs, virtual PMHNP jobs, work-from-home psychiatric NP, telepsychiatry nurse practitioner, or remote PMHNP jobs roles.

Scheduled Telepsychiatry Sessions with Flexible Coverage

Telepsychiatry practice runs on scheduled patient appointments, giving your clinical day predictability and structure. Programs typically offer 30-minute medication management visits and 60-minute initial evaluations, with options for daytime, evening, or weekend coverage to accommodate patients who work or have family commitments. Many platforms offer flexible 6-, 8-, or 10-hour blocks, and some PMHNPs work 4-day compressed weeks or set their own caseload. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, you may provide psychiatric care across a range of virtual clinical encounters.

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations via secure video for new patients.
  • Develop and document individualized psychiatric treatment plans based on clinical assessment.
  • Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, including monitoring for efficacy, side effects, and safety.
  • Conduct ongoing medication management visits and adjust treatment based on clinical response.
  • Diagnose psychiatric conditions using DSM-5-TR criteria and current clinical standards.
  • Order and interpret relevant labs, screening tools, and diagnostic studies as appropriate.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients about their condition and treatment options.
  • Coordinate care with therapists, primary care providers, and other specialists.
  • Document each clinical encounter accurately in the behavioral health EHR.
  • Assess for crisis risk and initiate safety planning or emergency response when indicated.
  • Escalate acute safety concerns, medical emergencies, or clinical crises to emergency services immediately.
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians where required by state scope-of-practice rules.
  • Maintain appropriate licensure, DEA registration, and continuing education.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, case reviews, and quality improvement activities.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual interactions.

Telepsychiatry Focus

Telepsychiatry is one of the fastest-growing areas of virtual care — driven by increased demand for mental health services, payer coverage for telehealth, and patient preference for receiving psychiatric care in a private, home-based setting. PMHNPs are increasingly at the center of virtual psychiatric care delivery.

Depending on the program, telepsychiatry may focus on:

Adult psychiatric care
Child & adolescent psychiatry
Medication management
Mood and anxiety disorders
Trauma and PTSD
SUD and co-occurring disorders

The PMHNP provides psychiatric care within their licensure and clinical scope of practice — including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, prescribing, and ongoing medication management. Clinical emergencies, safety concerns, and acute risk are escalated to emergency services or the appropriate clinical team immediately, following program protocol and applicable law.

This structure keeps the role focused on psychiatric evaluation, medication management, treatment planning, documentation, care coordination, and appropriate escalation.

Psychiatric Assessment & Medication Management

PMHNP practice is grounded in strong clinical assessment and thoughtful medication management — combining psychiatric evaluation with psychopharmacology and patient education.

Depending on the program and patient population, you may:

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric interviews and mental status exams.
  • Develop differential diagnoses using DSM-5-TR criteria.
  • Prescribe psychiatric medications using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Monitor response to treatment, side effects, and drug interactions.
  • Adjust medications based on clinical response and patient preference.
  • Educate patients on medication effects, adherence, and when to reach out.
  • Coordinate with therapists providing concurrent psychotherapy.
  • Support patients through medication transitions and changes.
  • Recognize and respond to psychiatric emergencies in a virtual setting.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for prescribing, billing, and clinical review.

Clinical judgment, therapeutic alliance, and thoughtful psychopharmacology are essential — PMHNPs provide psychiatric care that is both evidence-based and deeply personal.

Telepsychiatry Workflow

A Remote Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner may follow a structured workflow across each patient relationship.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Schedule Psychiatric Evaluation Diagnosis & Plan Prescribe & Educate Document Encounter Coordinate Care Crisis / Escalate If Needed

Crisis & Safety Protocols

If a patient presents with acute safety concerns — including suicidal ideation, self-harm, or a psychiatric emergency — the clinician must follow the employer's crisis escalation protocol immediately, including coordinating emergency services or a warm handoff as directed. Telepsychiatry does not replace emergency care.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) certification.
  • Current RN and APRN/NP licensure applicable to the specific assignment.
  • Master's or doctoral degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Clinical experience in psychiatric assessment, medication management, and behavioral health treatment.
  • Current DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Strong clinical documentation, therapeutic communication, and crisis assessment skills.
  • Comfortable with telehealth platforms and behavioral health EHR systems.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing your virtual session schedule — checking new patient evaluations, follow-up medication management visits, and any patient messages needing response.

You'll conduct psychiatric evaluations by video — gathering history, performing mental status exams, developing differential diagnoses, and formulating treatment plans that may include medications, therapy referrals, and lifestyle supports.

For follow-up visits, you'll assess treatment response, adjust medications when indicated, and address patient questions and concerns.

Between sessions, you'll document clinical encounters thoroughly, respond to patient messages, coordinate with therapists and primary care providers, and follow up on any patient whose condition has changed.

The role combines psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, patient education, care coordination, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike facility-based psychiatric care, telepsychiatry relies on clear clinical communication across a screen — a different clinical environment than in-person practice, and one that many patients now prefer.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote telepsychiatry delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:

Telehealth platforms
Behavioral health EHR
e-Prescribing systems

Candidates should have a stable internet connection suitable for real-time video, a private workspace suitable for confidential clinical sessions, and comfort with multiple digital platforms.
