Remote Health Information Technician

Support health information management — reviewing medical records, processing release of information, maintaining chart integrity, and supporting HIM compliance from home.

$20–$34 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects healthcare professionals with opportunities across virtual health information management, digital medical records, and remote HIM programs.

We are seeking qualified Health Information Technicians (RHITs) for remote opportunities supporting hospitals, health systems, physician groups, and HIM service organizations.

A Remote Health Information Technician supports HIM operations through medical records review, release of information, chart integrity, and health information compliance. Working within their HIM certification and scope of practice, the technician ensures that the medical record is complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties.

This position is well-suited to a health information professional who wants to work in a virtual setting — supporting medical records integrity and compliance with predictable workflows and without the demands of an on-site HIM department.

The specific HIM program, patient population, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote health information technician jobs, virtual HIM technician jobs, work-from-home medical records technician, remote release of information jobs, or remote RHIT jobs roles.

Steady HIM Rhythm with Predictable Workflows

Remote HIM roles run on steady daily workflows — chart review, medical record processing, release of information requests, and integrity follow-up, all worked through systematically. Most HIM teams run weekday business hours, with some offering flexible scheduling for coverage across time zones. There are no overnight shifts, no physical demands, and no on-call. Many HIM teams offer flexible 6-, 8-, or 10-hour blocks, and some technicians work 4-day compressed weeks. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote Health Information Technician, you may support HIM operations across a range of activities.

  • Review medical records for completeness, accuracy, and required documentation elements.
  • Support chart integrity by identifying missing or incomplete documentation and following up with clinical teams.
  • Process release of information (ROI) requests from patients, providers, and authorized third parties.
  • Verify requestor authorization, identity, and legal right to request records before processing.
  • Validate that disclosures comply with HIPAA, state law, and organizational policies.
  • Coordinate with legal, compliance, and privacy teams on complex or sensitive requests.
  • Support medical record retention and destruction processes according to organizational and legal requirements.
  • Assist with chart correction requests and documentation amendment workflows.
  • Maintain accurate records of disclosures, ROI requests, and HIM activities.
  • Support HIM quality audits and record integrity reviews.
  • Coordinate with coding, CDI, and clinical teams on documentation and record needs.
  • Escalate compliance concerns, potential privacy breaches, or unusual requests to the appropriate team member immediately.
  • Participate in team meetings, quality reviews, and HIM program improvement activities.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain HIPAA compliance across all HIM interactions.

Health Information Management Focus

Health information management (HIM) is the backbone of the medical record — ensuring the record is complete, accurate, confidential, and accessible to authorized parties throughout the patient's care and beyond. Digital HIM operations are growing rapidly across hospitals, health systems, and HIM service organizations.

Depending on the program, remote HIM work may focus on:

Medical record review
Release of information
Chart integrity and completion
Chart correction and amendments
HIPAA compliance support
Record retention and destruction

The HIM technician's role is to support medical record integrity and compliance within their certification and scope of practice — not to make clinical decisions, diagnose, or provide clinical advice. Clinical documentation questions are escalated to the appropriate clinical, coding, or CDI team member, and compliance or privacy concerns are escalated to the appropriate team per employer protocol.

This structure keeps the role focused on medical record review, release of information, chart integrity, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Privacy & Release of Information

HIM professionals are often the guardians of patient privacy — ensuring that records are released only to authorized parties and only for authorized purposes.

You may support privacy by:

  • Verifying requestor authorization and legal right to access records.
  • Confirming requestor identity and validating supporting documentation.
  • Applying HIPAA rules and state-specific privacy laws to each disclosure request.
  • Recognizing special protections for sensitive records (e.g., behavioral health, substance use, HIV, genetic information).
  • Coordinating with legal and compliance teams on subpoenas, court orders, and attorney requests.
  • Documenting disclosures accurately and maintaining required accounting of disclosures.
  • Escalating potential privacy concerns, unauthorized access, or unusual requests immediately.
  • Supporting patient access to their own records under HIPAA right-of-access rules.

Attention to detail, discretion, and knowledge of privacy rules are essential — HIM technicians are the team members most responsible for protecting the confidentiality of the medical record.

Remote HIM Workflow

A Remote Health Information Technician may follow a structured workflow across each record or request.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Review Record Identify Gaps or Request Verify Authorization Process or Follow Up Document Action Coordinate with Teams Escalate If Needed

HIPAA & Privacy Compliance

HIM work is grounded in HIPAA and state privacy rules. Any potential privacy concern, unauthorized access, unusual disclosure request, or compliance issue is escalated to the appropriate privacy officer or compliance team immediately per employer protocol.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Health Information credential (RHIT, RHIA, or CCA) applicable to the specific assignment, or relevant HIM experience.
  • Previous experience in medical records, health information management, release of information, or chart review.
  • Strong knowledge of HIPAA, medical record retention, release of information requirements, and health information systems.
  • Comfortable with EHR systems, HIM software, and documentation workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to recognize situations requiring compliance or privacy escalation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential record review.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing your work queue — pending release of information requests, chart completion follow-ups, record integrity reviews, and documentation amendment requests.

You'll work through each item systematically: verifying requestor authorization, processing record releases, following up on missing documentation with clinical teams, and maintaining accurate records of each action.

When a request is complex or involves sensitive records, you'll coordinate with legal, compliance, or privacy teams — following the employer's protocol for those cases.

Between requests, you'll support HIM quality audits, assist with chart corrections, and maintain documentation of all HIM activities.

The role combines medical record review, release of information, chart integrity, compliance support, documentation, and appropriate escalation.

Unlike on-site HIM roles, remote HIM work is steady and structured — focused on record integrity and privacy compliance across the healthcare organization.

Remote Work Environment

This position is designed for remote HIM delivery.

Depending on the employer, you may work with:
