Remote E/M Coder

Provide Evaluation and Management coding, office/outpatient E/M leveling, and E/M documentation review — from home.

$24–$42 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects E/M coders with opportunities across Evaluation and Management coding, office/outpatient E/M leveling, and remote E/M coding compliance.

We are seeking qualified E/M Coders for remote opportunities supporting physician practices, multispecialty groups, ambulatory clinics, health systems, and professional coding organizations.

A Remote E/M Coder codes Evaluation and Management services across office, outpatient, and other settings for accurate E/M reimbursement. Working within their coding certification and coding compliance scope, the E/M coder reviews provider documentation, assigns CPT E/M codes, applies E/M leveling under 1995, 1997, and 2021+ guidelines, and supports accurate E/M-side reimbursement across clinical settings.

This position is well-suited to an experienced E/M coder with E/M coding knowledge, office/outpatient E/M leveling experience, and coding certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful E/M coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific E/M focus, clinical setting mix, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote E/M coder jobs, work-from-home E/M coder jobs, remote evaluation and management coder jobs, virtual E/M coder, or telehealth E/M coding specialist roles.

Structured Virtual E/M Coding with Predictable Hours

Virtual E/M coding runs on scheduled coding queues and coding production workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend hours. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

What You'll Do

As a Remote E/M Coder, you may support E/M coding across a range of virtual coding encounters.

  • Review provider documentation for E/M coding — reviewing office visit notes, progress notes, and clinical documentation.
  • Assign CPT E/M codes — accurately coding office/outpatient E/M services supported by documentation.
  • Apply E/M leveling — leveling E/M services under 1995, 1997, and 2021+ guidelines.

  • Support denial management — supporting coding-related E/M denial management and appeals.
  • Participate in coding quality improvement and E/M revenue cycle quality improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of CPT E/M coding, 1995/1997/2021+ E/M guidelines, MDM, time-based coding, and CMS requirements.
  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual E/M coding work.

Virtual E/M Coder Focus

Virtual E/M coding is a growing area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for E/M coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that E/M coders improve coding accuracy and physician revenue through accurate E/M coding across office and outpatient settings. Virtual E/M coders extend coding reach, support physician practices, and improve E/M coding quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual E/M coding may focus on:

Office/outpatient E/M coding
MDM-based E/M leveling
Time-based E/M leveling
Preventive medicine coding
Multispecialty E/M coding
E/M coding compliance

The E/M coder's role is to provide Evaluation and Management coding within their coding certification and coding compliance scope — including provider documentation review, CPT E/M coding, E/M leveling under 1995/1997/2021+ guidelines, MDM and time-based coding, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, modifier application, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and provider documentation; the E/M coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, physician, and revenue cycle teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on E/M coding, E/M leveling, MDM and time-based coding, documentation, and coding compliance.

E/M Leveling & Documentation Review Support

Effective virtual E/M coding depends on strong E/M leveling skills and provider documentation knowledge — the coder's coding expertise and clinical documentation insight determine how to help physician practices achieve accurate E/M-side coding.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support E/M coding by:

  • Reviewing provider documentation for E/M coding.
  • Assigning CPT E/M codes — office/outpatient E/M services supported by documentation.
  • Applying E/M leveling — 1995, 1997, and 2021+ guidelines.
  • Applying MDM — leveling E/M services based on MDM complexity.
  • Applying time-based coding — leveling E/M services based on total time.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Applying modifiers — appropriate modifiers for E/M-side billing.
  • Supporting preventive medicine coding — preventive visits and services.
  • Supporting E/M coding quality — E/M coding quality and accuracy.
  • Supporting coding compliance — CPT E/M guidelines and CMS requirements.
  • Supporting coding audits — internal and external E/M coding audits.
  • Supporting provider education — provider documentation education.
  • Documenting coding work accurately and consistently.
  • Supporting denial management — coding-related E/M denial management and appeals.

Coding expertise, provider documentation knowledge, and clear communication are essential — E/M coders are the coding professionals who help physician practices achieve accurate E/M-side coding across clinical settings.

Virtual E/M Coder Workflow

A Remote E/M Coder may follow a structured workflow across each virtual E/M coding encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Coding Assignment Review Provider Documentation Assign CPT E/M Codes Apply E/M Leveling Assign ICD-10-CM Codes Apply Modifiers Document Coding Escalate If Needed

Coding Compliance & HIPAA Compliance

E/M coding directly affects physician reimbursement, coding compliance, and professional revenue cycle performance. All coding must comply with CPT E/M guidelines (1995, 1997, 2021+), CMS requirements, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting E/M reimbursement must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. E/M coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual E/M coding work.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an E/M coder, outpatient coder, or professional fee coder.
  • Strong E/M coding knowledge, office/outpatient E/M leveling skills, and E/M documentation review experience.
  • Comfortable with CPT E/M coding, 1995/1997 E/M guidelines, 2021+ E/M guidelines, MDM, and time-based coding.
  • Coding certification (CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential coding work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing coding queues and coding assignments — checking E/M coding priorities and coding production tasks across clinical settings.

You'll review provider documentation — reviewing office visit notes, progress notes, and clinical documentation to identify E/M level and diagnoses supported by documentation.

You'll assign CPT E/M codes, apply E/M leveling under 1995, 1997, and 2021+ guidelines, apply MDM and time-based coding, assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, and apply modifiers — accurately coding E/M services for E/M-side billing.

Between coding activities, you'll support coding quality, coding compliance, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, physician teams, and revenue cycle teams, and support coding compliance with CPT E/M guidelines and CMS requirements.

The role combines E/M coding, E/M leveling, MDM and time-based coding, coding compliance, documentation, and provider education.

Unlike professional fee coder work, which spans all physician services including surgical and procedural coding, E/M coder work focuses specifically on Evaluation and Management services — you're the E/M coder who helps physician practices achieve accurate E/M-side coding across office and outpatient settings.
