Remote HCC Coder

Provide Medicare Advantage HCC coding, HCC diagnosis capture, and HCC documentation review — from home.

$28–$48 / hour 100% Remote Full-Time / Part-Time Multiple U.S. States

Job Overview

Virelia Health connects HCC coders with opportunities across Medicare Advantage HCC coding, HCC diagnosis capture, and remote HCC documentation review.

We are seeking qualified HCC Coders for remote opportunities supporting health plans, managed care organizations (MCOs), risk adjustment vendors, provider groups, and healthcare organizations.

A Remote HCC Coder codes Medicare Advantage diagnoses to HCC for accurate risk score capture. Working within their coding certification and coding compliance scope, the HCC coder reviews medical records, assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, maps them to CMS-HCC (Hierarchical Condition Category), and supports accurate HCC diagnosis capture for Medicare Advantage and other risk-bearing programs.

This position is well-suited to an experienced HCC coder with HCC coding knowledge, HCC diagnosis capture experience, and coding certification who wants to work in a virtual setting — providing meaningful HCC coding support with schedule flexibility and without the demands of a facility-based environment.

The specific HCC program, CMS-HCC model year, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.

This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote HCC coder jobs, work-from-home HCC coder jobs, remote Medicare Advantage coder jobs, virtual HCC coder, or telehealth HCC coding specialist roles.

Structured Virtual HCC Coding with Predictable Hours

Virtual HCC coding runs on scheduled chart review cycles and coding production workflows, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting extended hours during seasonal coding cycles. Many programs offer flexible 8- or 10-hour days, and some coders work 4-day compressed weeks or part-time schedules. There are no facility floor assignments and no physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.

  • Protect patient data and maintain HIPAA compliance across all virtual HCC coding work.

Virtual HCC Coder Focus

Virtual HCC coding is a growing area of healthcare coding — driven by increased demand for HCC coding accuracy, expanded telehealth coverage for remote coding work, and the recognition that HCC coders improve HCC diagnosis capture and risk score accuracy through accurate CMS-HCC coding. Virtual HCC coders extend coding reach, support health plans and providers, and improve HCC data quality across organizations.

Depending on the program, virtual HCC coding may focus on:

HCC coding
HCC diagnosis capture
Risk score accuracy
RADV audit support
HCC provider education
HCC coding compliance

The HCC coder's role is to provide HCC coding within their coding certification and coding compliance scope — including medical record review, ICD-10-CM coding, CMS-HCC mapping, HCC diagnosis capture, coding documentation, and coding compliance. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership and provider documentation; the HCC coder supports the coding process and coordinates with coding, risk adjustment, and clinical documentation teams.

This structure keeps the role focused on HCC coding, HCC diagnosis capture, CMS-HCC mapping, documentation, and provider education.

HCC Diagnosis Capture & Risk Score Accuracy Support

Effective virtual HCC coding depends on strong HCC diagnosis capture skills and clinical documentation knowledge — the coder's coding expertise and clinical insight determine how to help health plans and providers achieve accurate risk score capture.

Depending on the program and clinical focus, you may support HCC coding by:

  • Reviewing medical records for HCC coding.
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes — diagnoses supported by documentation.
  • Mapping diagnoses to CMS-HCC — HCC codes under the current model.
  • Identifying HCC-relevant diagnoses — chronic and acute conditions.
  • Supporting HCC diagnosis capture — accurate capture of HCC-relevant diagnoses.
  • Supporting HCC documentation review — documentation gaps and provider education.
  • Supporting risk score accuracy — accurate risk score calculation.
  • Supporting RADV audit preparation — Risk Adjustment Data Validation audits.
  • Supporting HCC coding quality — HCC coding quality and accuracy.
  • Supporting coding compliance — ICD-10-CM, CMS-HCC model, and CMS requirements.
  • Supporting coding audits — internal and external HCC coding audits.
  • Supporting provider education — provider documentation education.
  • Documenting coding work accurately and consistently.

Coding expertise, clinical documentation knowledge, and clear communication are essential — HCC coders are the coding professionals who help health plans and providers achieve accurate HCC diagnosis capture.

Virtual HCC Coder Workflow

A Remote HCC Coder may follow a structured workflow across each virtual HCC coding encounter.

Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:

Receive Chart Review Assignment Review Medical Record Assign ICD-10-CM Codes Map to CMS-HCC Document Coding Support RADV / Compliance Escalate If Needed

Coding Compliance & HIPAA Compliance

HCC coding directly affects risk score accuracy, Medicare Advantage payment, and coding compliance. All coding must comply with ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, CMS-HCC model rules, and organizational coding policy. Coding concerns requiring coding leadership input, compliance concerns, or coding issues affecting HCC data must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. HCC coders must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual HCC coding work.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an HCC coder, risk adjustment coder, or Medicare Advantage coder.
  • Strong HCC coding knowledge, HCC diagnosis capture skills, and HCC documentation review experience.
  • Comfortable with ICD-10-CM, CMS-HCC model, Medicare Advantage coding, and risk adjustment workflows.
  • Coding certification (CRC, CPC, CCS, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Strong documentation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Reliable internet and a private workspace suitable for confidential coding work.

A Typical Day

A typical day may begin by reviewing coding queues and coding assignments — checking HCC coding priorities and coding production tasks for Medicare Advantage members.

You'll review medical records — reviewing provider documentation and clinical data to identify HCC-relevant diagnoses supported by documentation.

You'll assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, map diagnoses to CMS-HCC, and support accurate HCC diagnosis capture for risk score calculation.

Between coding activities, you'll support HCC coding quality, coding compliance, and coding audits, and document coding work accurately in the coding system.

Throughout the day, you'll coordinate with coding teams, risk adjustment teams, and clinical documentation teams, and support coding compliance with ICD-10-CM, CMS-HCC model, and CMS requirements.

The role combines HCC coding, HCC diagnosis capture, CMS-HCC mapping, coding compliance, documentation, and provider education.

Unlike Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) work, which is broader risk adjustment across Medicare Advantage, commercial, and Medicaid risk models, HCC coder work focuses specifically on CMS-HCC diagnosis capture and HCC mapping — you're the HCC coder who helps health plans and providers achieve accurate HCC diagnosis capture.
