Support the HIM team with record processing, health information tasks, and record accuracy — from home. No RHIT required.
Virelia Health connects Health Information Assistants with remote opportunities across healthcare organizations — hospitals, clinics, medical practices, and health information management (HIM) departments.
We are seeking motivated Remote Health Information Assistants for entry-level and early-career opportunities supporting HIM teams across the United States.
A Remote Health Information Assistant supports the health information management (HIM) team with record processing, record accuracy tasks, health information workflows, and administrative HIM support for healthcare organizations. Working within the HIM team's scope, the Health Information Assistant is the administrative backbone of the HIM department — processing records, tracking chart deficiencies, supporting record completion, and helping the HIM team keep records accurate and compliant.
No prior healthcare or HIM experience is required, and no RHIT certification is required. Paid training is provided. This role is well-suited to candidates who are detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable supporting a records team — including career changers, recent graduates, and first-time remote workers coming from administrative, clerical, or file management roles.
The specific healthcare organization, HIM workflows, and scope of responsibilities will depend on the employer and assignment.
This opportunity may be suitable for professionals searching for remote health information assistant jobs, work-from-home HIM assistant jobs, entry-level healthcare jobs no experience, remote HIM support, or virtual health information assistant roles.
This is a true entry-level role. No prior healthcare, HIM, or medical records experience is required — and no RHIT certification is required. Employers provide paid training on HIM systems, record processing workflows, deficiency tracking, and HIPAA compliance. If you are detail-oriented, organized, and can learn new software, you're a great fit. Many of our Health Information Assistants come from administrative, clerical, file management, banking, and retail roles.
Remote HIM work runs on scheduled shifts and HIM processing queues, giving your workday predictability and structure. Programs typically offer daytime weekday coverage, with some programs supporting evening or weekend hours. Many programs offer flexible 8-hour days, and some assistants work part-time schedules around school or family commitments. There are no clinical duties, no phone work, and no patient-facing physical demands. We offer both full-time and part-time positions. Discuss your preferred schedule during your interview.
As a Remote Health Information Assistant, you may support the HIM team across a range of health information encounters.
Virtual health information management is a growing area of healthcare operations — driven by increased demand for accurate healthcare records, expanded digital records, and the recognition that dedicated HIM assistants improve record accuracy, reduce chart deficiencies, and improve healthcare data quality. Virtual Health Information Assistants extend HIM support reach, support healthcare organizations, and improve record quality across organizations.
Depending on the program, virtual health information work may focus on:
The Health Information Assistant's role is to provide HIM support within the HIM team's scope — including record processing, deficiency tracking, chart completion, and accurate documentation. Clinical decisions, patient care decisions, and clinical documentation decisions remain with clinical leadership; the Health Information Assistant supports the HIM process and coordinates with HIM, coding, and clinical teams.
This structure keeps the role focused on HIM support, record processing, documentation, and record quality support.
The Health Information Assistant is a key support role within the HIM team — helping HIM specialists and HIM leadership by handling the administrative and processing work that keeps records accurate and complete. You'll support chart deficiency tracking (following up on incomplete physician documentation), chart completion workflows, record indexing and filing, and record retrieval. Your work directly supports HIM operations and helps the organization pass record audits.
Depending on the program and HIM focus, you may support HIM by:
Attention to detail, organization, and reliability are essential — Health Information Assistants support the HIM team and help healthcare organizations maintain the records that everything else depends on.
A Remote Health Information Assistant may follow a structured workflow across each virtual HIM encounter.
Depending on the employer's protocols, you may:
Health information work directly involves patient information, including names, contact details, medical record numbers, clinical data, and healthcare context. All HIM work must comply with HIPAA privacy rules, organizational patient privacy policy, and HIM documentation standards. HIM concerns requiring supervisor input, data discrepancies, or issues affecting patient records must be escalated following the employer's escalation protocol. Health Information Assistants must maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient data across all virtual HIM work.
Experience or background in any of the following may be beneficial — but none are required:
A typical day may begin by logging into the HIM system — reviewing the day's processing queue, pending deficiencies, and any priority tasks from the previous shift.
You'll process incoming records — reviewing records and entering them into the EHR and HIM system.
You'll scan and index documents — scanning paper documents and forms into the electronic record, and indexing them to the correct patient and encounter.
You'll track chart deficiencies — identifying charts with incomplete documentation, sending physician deficiency notices, and supporting chart completion workflows.
You'll retrieve records — for clinical, billing, and compliance teams — and support record audits.
Between tasks, you'll support ROI workflows, manage duplicate records, support data cleanups, and support HIM reporting.
Throughout the day, you'll work across multiple HIM systems, document your HIM activity accurately, support record quality goals, and maintain HIPAA compliance across all HIM work.
The role combines record processing, deficiency tracking, chart completion support, record retrieval, documentation, and HIM support.
Unlike clinical roles that require a nursing license or clinical certification, this Health Information Assistant role is a true entry-level position — and unlike HIM specialist roles, no RHIT certification is required.
